What can you buy at Jusco?

I'm moving to Usui, Sakura City prefecture by the end of the month, and there is a Jusco right down the street... After watching Shimotsuma Monogatari (Kamikaze Girls), I'm left with an odd notion about Jusco, apparently a big supermarket chain... I'm not one for American made food (though my girlfriend wants me to bring weird American food, and I'm at a loss on that one.... twinkies!? , What's anyone's Jusco-Shopping-Experience?

Jusco also has semi dasai clothes and stuff too.

The one in my town sells bicycles as well.

Jusco is just a supermarket chain....you go there, you buy what you want to eat, you avoid the things you don't like, you lament at what you can't get, you get over it and move on.

4lb. jar of extra-crunchy Skippy peanut butter for less than ﾂ??00. Gotta love it. And their monster apple pies that run less than ﾂ??40 are to die for. Best pie (not to mention the biggest, about the size of a large pizza) in Japan at that price hands down imho.

Yeah its just a walmart esque deal.
The Jusco near me had both groveries and the kind of goods you buy at K-mart/Walmart/Target/Big W.
Only went there because they occasionally had exclusive Transformers.

Because peanut butter in Japan is normally pretty expensive (even for a small quantity) and it's one of the few things in life I have a weakspot for, heh. Nothing like a nice warm slice of fresh raisin loaf bread slathered with peanut butter then toasted just right...

Jusco, not Costco

I think those mentioning large jars of peanut butter and pies are thinking of the US warehouse chain COSTCO, which requires $40 yearly membership and is only available in a few places in Japan. (BTW: You can buy most Costco goods at The Flying Pig website without a membership.)

JUSCO is a Wal-Mart type store owned by corp giant AEON. While I hate Wal-Mart (and I'm from Arkansas), Jusco has been helpful. We got their credit card to take advantage of bonus points and 5-10% off. They also have discounted gas, organic produce grown locally, rotisserie chickens- but not so much foreign food. We find that it tastes fresher there than the local grocery stores, but we live in rural southern Kyushu with little choice.

Aeon owns 24hr. supermarkets, home improvement stores, Jusco malls, etc. If you need to tighten the purse strings, then shop there. If you hate corporate capitalism, don't shop there. If you want to see Japanese poking fun at them, watch the hilarious movie "Kamikaze Girls."

It's true. It lasts a long time, too, so you don't have to worry about buying a lot. I used to buy it in Taiwan for days when I didn't feel like a pricey restaurant meal or a dicey biandang (that's "bento"). The one time I tried to buy raisin bread, though, it turned out to be red bean bread! It looks almost identical--I didn't even check the label before I picked it up.

Note to self: learn the Japanese for "raisin bread."

I'm not a big fan of peanut butter in any country... so I'm good on that. I don't require any special sort of western diet, so I just wondered if you could buy the normal things you might at a small market, if it was cheap... if it's a supermarket, it's bound to be anoying no matter what country it's in...
