A production crew from Animal Planet (a U.S. TV network) has been aboard the Steve Irwin and documenting the whole campaign with TV cameras. They're going to call it "Whale Wars" and will air it on the Animal Planet network this fall. I don't know if it will be international or not, but I'm sure after it's out it will be on DVD.

I think it would be very interesting to see that. I would hope, by all means, that it would be fully and completely fair and balanced...but have a bit of a small gut feeling that it might not quite be as much so as possible.

The reason I say that, is because of a paradox that has seem to have arisen in all of this...really interesting. (which I may one day open a thread on in Serious Discussions) A clue to that paradox, actually, can be seen here in Sarapva's signature quote.

I look forward to seeing the documentary. Of course, the Japanese vessels have their camera crews too.
 
I think I see what you mean, Mars Man! Yes, I guess it's a paradox, though the Steve Irwin crew hasn't hurt anyone. But yes, it would be interesting to see both sides. Maybe the Japanese crew will make a film too. It would probably be very educational to see both films together (one from the Sea Shepherd's perspective and the other from the whalers' perspective).
 
I would look forward to seeing programs/films on whaling which are really not biased, or if they are biased, are equally biased. Few people seem to be presenting facts on whaling which do not represent propaganda for their cause/point of view.
 
I got a bit of a laugh out of that...and appreciate the comic relief effect there...

Let's hope the documentaries give all the stats and pertinent information.

In one meaning, 'war' means war, but, in different meaning, it means simply not agreeing, so...it is without taking it too deeply, or heavily. In that way of understanding, the cartoon made me laugh a little...as we know, there's no clear cut answer anyway...

That could be right, caster51 san, but then again, who knows. Let's wait and see what the documentary turns out to be. For the meantime, however, this thread is primarily about that future release.

Only the native Eskimos in Alaska hunt whales in the U.S. under subsistence hunting, like the aborigines in Australia.

Why do you use "hunt whales" instead of "kill whales"? You always say "Japanese kill whales".
You know Americans hunt whales.
Why aren't you Crying Out "Don't kill Whales", In the Center of the US?

They are American in the same way that forest tribes in South America are considered 'Brazilian', the name is really only given because they happen to live on the same land. It's hard to explain but they don't really play by the same rules as the rest of the country and because they do everything on a very small scale, being few in numbers and usually using traditional methods, nobody protests.
 
The hypocrisy of Sea Shepherd is that it does not say anything on the whaling in oil-producing Alaskan whaling, but it condemns J whaling, native Canadian's seal hunting, or non-Alaskan native American request of whaling as immoral activities.

If the program covered the hypocrisy, I would love to buy the DVD.
 

I wonder how people who base their opposition against whaling on "inhumane" or "cruel" methods to kill whales look at "traditional" whaling. Surely, "traditional" methods to kill whales can't be any less cruel than the modern methods. That would make a better documentary than filming a bunch of juvinille pseudo-environmentalists throwing glass bottles.

Anyway, the presence of a film crew further illustrates the commercialism of the eco-terrorist group. If not compensated directly by the TV production, they will collect a lot of donations based on the media exposure. That's their business model.
 

MadamePapillon described the situation pretty well. I doubt that the native Eskimos even think of themselves as American, and they certainly don't live the way the main population of Americans do. Although I don't agree with anyone killing whales, I wouldn't protest a group's hunting to stay alive. Traditional methods of hunting whales probably are less humane than the more modern methods. But the Eskimos only hunt around 50 whales a year for survival. That's different from hundreds of whales for science or to sell.

Sorry about going off topic here. Maybe the documentary will cover some of these issues. It will be interesting to see if it gives different perspectives.

They vote, serve on juries, fly in airplanes, drive in autos, send and receive US mail, watch TV, and even post on internet forums. Their villages and towns have mayors and city councils. They lobby the Alaska legislature and US Congress.

They may have dual self-identities (Eskimo and American), but you can't call their citizenship just a technicality.
 
Eskimos don't build gigantic slaughter ships, sail to an international whale sanctuary, lie about performing scientific research, slaughter hundreds of whales a year, and then sell the meat on the market.

I think there's a difference between Eskimos and the wholesale slaughter the Japanese whaling fleet performs. Then again, will anyone who doesn't mind whales being killed/eaten acknowledge the difference? No accountability, so this discussion is tediously never-ending.
