Vista a failure?

[snip]One of these days , I guess I will have to read the instruction book that came with my new PC.

Uncle Frank

😊

For the sake of your mental health, I sincerely hope that the instruction book for your PC is better than the one that came with our Panasonic DMR-ES35V combination VHS/DVD recorder. We've both been buying Panasonic products now and again for years, but this is by far the worst instruction book either one of us has ever seen. Not only is the instruction book really hard to follow (hardly any organization at all), but by trial and effort we have found how to do things that aren't even mentioned in the book. Good luck! 🙂

Im a happy XP user and i knew that Vista is causing problems i give Bill one year and his vista is full upgraded and fixed.

His plans for fixing and upgrading is to destroy compatability further. This is all to force his DRM on us. Plus, he'll only add to it, not taking stuff away. Patchwork, which means vista will be slow. In the end, XP now will be vista in a few years, only a few more features to keep us happy. I don't like how everyone's trying to force vista down our throats. I'm going to switch to Kolibri when it's more stable and has unicode support.

The lines are blurring between Apple computers and Windows-based computers, you know that, right? You should visit an Apple store and see for your self. You can even boot Windows on their systems now, so any program that doesn't have a OS X equivlent is taken care of..

This is true for 2 reasons. Mac is going von neuman (intel, amd, etc) and windows is adding rediculous features and security protocols that don't prevent problems, they prevent people from fixing them. And both have a DRM...

This is news to me and I am smiling, Never want to use Vista in any shape or form, have been told that Vista allows outside authorities to track your entire internet usage no matter what you have installed on your own PC.

This is BS. Your ISP does that, meaning no matter what you use, you're being tracked.

I bought a new laptop computer about a month ago. of course it had Vista on it, but I didn't want it, so I went through the trouble of buying XP separately just so I wouldn't have to deal with Vista. I would have used Linux, but as I learned last time I tried, it just doesn't have the driver support or software I need.

Windows emulator? =p

Both times I tried to use Linux I gave up pretty fast because it only seemed to be able to connect to my school network (ergo, the internet) about 4% of the time at random. Also I couldn't figure out how to use Japanese input, and having to install most of my programs by compiling them was a colossal pain in the neck.

The last straw was when my secondary hard drive crashed and LILO wouldn't let me boot Windows because it couldn't find the broken hard drive (Windows was entirely installed on the healthy hard drive).

I've been thinking of giving Linux another try to see if it's become any less lame in the last 3 years but alas, I don't really feel like re-partitioning my hard drive.

Could be reasons outside of linux. if your network was made for windows, linux may use some other protocols first and doesn't meet the network's minimum requirements. May even the network only wants windows only and fails sometimes and lets you in.

Windows sucks in general, but xp is the most patched up version at the moment. I had to accept vista when I got my laptop, but I don't think it really leaks so much any more. I prefer linux, but it is good to have one windows machine too so you can make everything work. I'm not good at making games work with linux! ^^;

Getting a mac some day would be outstanding!

Agreed, but i heard that a particular version of windows is pretty stable. It's not xp or vista, though... I forget what it was.

Vista eats too much RAM.
Perfomance difference between Vista and XP is quite evident on my computer.

Today, the law is that the sooner it gets on the market the better. It's ok if it's glitchy. It's not just windows, as a programmer i know all of the computer politics out there. They teach us not to worry about speed or other things, "since the compiler will do it the best way for you." As an assembly programmer, i know better.

TO ALL: The downgrade/upgrade may be a problem. Vista machines usually use 64 bit technology. XP is mostly 32bit programs. I havn't gotten around, yet, to finding out whether 64 bit programs can run on the 32 bit windows on a 64 processor (i doubt it). Therefor, it's a waste of money to buy the hardware, but at least you get a fancy new computer that sounds like it runs fast using XP. Really shows how horribly vista was made when the horribly made xp (yes, XP is bloated as well) when the the slower computer runs faster than the faster computer. I'd try looking around at some works in progress, even though they don't have the drivers. Best thing to do is to install both a version of windows and another OS. Windows is for the things you need drivers for like games and stuff, while you do all your email checking, posting, image editing, and other heavy work on the other, non-bloated OS.

Followup to my own post #4 in this thread:

Meanwhile I have done the switch, installed Ubuntu Linux "Gutsy Gibbon". No problem at all. It is a bit,,,,,,,different, but I did not expect it to be a silly Windows clone anyway. So, I am still learning this and that. But I can do my job undistracted, everything I need is there or can be found easily enough. Slowly, but surely, I am beginning to have fun with it.

So, in my case, I'll give Vista a miss.

I've pretty much decided that I'm going to switch over to a Mac next time I buy a computer. I'm sick of Windows.

I echo MO's Mac statement.

Can Mac's with English OS's be purchased in Japan?

Does anyone know of an online store their selling them? Would be greatly appreciated..

I did purchase an IBM English OS last time..

I used to think that it would be great to have a Mac, but in recent months I have had a little experience with Safari (Mac browser), and I hated it. Not all as intuitive and easy to use, as Mac programs are supposed to be.

Yes, you can buy a Mac with English in Japan....it's just super expensive! I checked it out before I bought mine. Anohito I too was used to other browsers and safari took a while to get used to, it really does get better and better. I would never go back.

Mac is the future of Windows (Or at least, they plan on making their system just like mac). If you're sick of windows why bother with mac. Same thing, only cheaper. I'd go with linux or look for other freeware kernels (more than just Mac, Win, and Lin). There are even open source projects out there as well.

I have very little problem with XP - although "Widows Updates" have given me so much trouble that I have switched them "off"!

Have no desire whatsoever in moving to Vista - it seems to be a complete "Gongshow" from what I have heard.

I have Ubuntu Linux ready to go - am just saving my data and am preparing to do a dual-boot set-up.

Wish me luck!

I just purchased a new Dell Laptop a few hrs ago and I was surprised to find out that I could order one with Windows XP Home. Of course I opted for the XP as a couple of computer engineers that I know recommended XP over Vista. Even today Vista has many problems they said and it really is a hog when it comes to eating up your resources.

If Dell is still offering XP over Vista if you ask, (even though the website says "Dell recommends WIndows Vista") there must be problems still lingering.

Yes, it seems that you're quite correct. And IMHO, very wise!

I am about to get my computer replaced at the office. I am opting for XP Pro. if possible. It seems that MS are still offering XP until June of this year - but there's a slim possibility that a reprieve could be in order, thanks to public demand.

I believe more than one petition, worldwide, has been raised in this regard.

"Bill" must be really smarting!👏

Speaking as a captive Windows user (and former Mac User), Vista isn't bad if you have it on a new, powerful machine. And, we have to wait for some time to have all the software in the market to be Vista-compatible.

As a new Vista user, the complaint I have about it is that it has nagging security control during software installation. (It has to be disabled until I finish installation of all my software.)

Also, I was totally disappointed that a software I use for work doesn't work on Vista!! I need to upgrade!! :(

So, I'm going back to XP for a while... :auch:

Addendum: For anyone using XP, download and install Service Pack 3, and you're done with most updates for XP. It actually runs smoothly! ✌️

Vista surprise !

I got a "blue screen of death" warning the other day and my PC shut down in about 10 seconds. I didn't even have time to read the whole warning. Then it restarted and asked if it could go to the internet for a fix. I clicked yes, and it downloaded an update from a non-Microsoft website; kind of scarey. Sure wish I had stuck with XP.

Yeah, Vista has a driver update problem. I had that, too. It is a totally new system that cannot run on older, legacy hardware configuration.

The features I like about Vista (Ultimate edition):
1. Windows Aero (Mac-like) look and feel
2. Multilingual capability (you can create a user account that is completely Japanese and another that is completely English) that I didn't have but wanted in XP! 👍
