visa sponsorship

I am currently working in Japan with a professor visa. My job finishes in December but my visa is valid until Sept 2009. I am returning to the UK over Christmas but I hope to return to Japan in January. Will immigration at the airport let me back in if I have a multiple entry visa and get a re-entry permit with this current visa or do I need to change the status etc? Will they know I am no longer working for the same company? Should i change it to a working holiday visa?
Any information that can help me would be great.

The reentry permit is what allows you back in the country and retain your visa.

Immigration will know nothing about your employment. You're safe. The visa is valid until it expires as long as you have the REP.

Thats great, so all i need to do is get the re-entry permit.
