Useless news..

I was often stunned by the useless news that Japanese TV stations like to broadcast. Items like Fuuta the lesser panda.. Cute, but useless nonetheless!!

Here's another one I found today. (The graphics are a bit blurry.)

So have you heard or saw any useless news on Japanese television you rarely see in your own country??

You know, I actually thought that the news about the lesser panda was a nice break from the constant barrage of violence, hate, blood and gory news.

I may be overly optimistic but I think that the overload of bad news that we often see on TV today makes us immune or numb to the horrors around us and we appreciate less the fun in our lives. We become accustomed to seeing the rotten side of life that we tend to forget the lighter side or the good things around us.

I'm sorry if I don't agree with you here, but I don't consider it useless.

I'm not sure if we disagree! I think it's good that people are shown lovely images instead of killings, death and war images from time to time. But it is pretty "useless" in a journalistic sense I think; I'm pretty sure Fuuta doesn't have such a big chance of making the history books, compared to any war.

But it is "useful" to give people a good feeling when watching TV, that's true. I think. Unless the viewer is a lesser panda hater of course.

Then I think we agree.

I will say however that at first I was a bit, ok more than a bit, surprised at the coverage the standing lesser panda received, probably because it was a part of the culture of cute here in Japan.

Yet after a bit of (small) consideration, and yes I agree that it really wasn't the usual journalistic content that I am used to on Japanese TV, I actually had a good laugh about it.

It made me feel pretty happy, in a strange sort of way.

Interesting thing to think about. I'll see if I notice any, but to be open, I really don't watch TV that much, and read more internationally related newspapers and magazines, so I may not be of much help.

In a twist--if I may--I have often considered Japanese TV news reporting to contain useless portions within it. For example, a grab where a person is being interviewed with their voice mixed out and their face covered with mosaic. The voice, ok, but if you have to hide the face that way, then why even bother putting on TV in the first place. That seems useless to me.

I was just surprised that they showed Wrestling sports news on an otherwise normal news-cast... Wrestling in the United States is largely seen as a "fake sport" full of people who actually do hurt each other... but nothing newsworthy... Watching Japanese wrestling it seems just as theatrical if you will, but I was still surprised to see it on the evening news.

Haha!! I'm sure you're exaggerating, but we rarely have that kind of news here. We do have a special news bulletin especially for kids in the afternoon, which does show that kind of topics..

Yeah, it IS a children's tv type of news story, I'd agree with you there...

What's the football team in Rotterdam? I'm in Dublin, but follow Liverpool. They're going to have a tough job next week in the CL.

Oh I hope the off-topic won't mind us discussing this..

We have three football clubs in Rotterdam: Feyenoord, Sparta and Excelsior. I favor Feyenoord first, then Sparta and I pretty much hate Excelsior. Feyenoord's usually in the top three of our league but are doing really bad this year; we'd be lucky if they don't finish sixth!!

Of the English league I like Liverpool too: Kuyt and Dudek are both ex-Feyenoord players. I hope they'll kick Chelsea's *** next week!!

I support Celtic of the Scottish league, what do you think of them? They won the championship (again!!) last week, thanks to a great free kick by Nakamura Shunsuke!!
