University Nomination - MEXT Scholarship

My Professor said it's best to come to Japan by 28th due to dorm and stuff. 25th works well for me and it's not over the weekend like they requested.

As for apartment, yeah. I was looking at guest houses, the shared house with private room are often not much cheaper than renting one of these monthly apartments. I was looking at sakura-house.
I need a place to stay at while I look on the real long term market for a suitable apartment near the campus. I've already declined the University dorm so that's not a choice for me anymore.

All in all, it'll probably be a bit on the expensive side but I'm sure it'll work out.
 

Sakura house is expensive, but you can make do for a while. Anyway, the housing price typically gets low around November and December (not many people search for rooms during this period), so you can wait. Also, university dorms are far; quite a hassle commuting everyday
 
So you're suggesting staying at sakura until november and only then looking for an apartment?
How much cheaper are we talking approximately? Any idea?
 
Depending on your negotiation skill and the type of the apartment, you can save about 5000-10,000Yen/a month. Often the contract length is 2 years, so this is quite a saving.

Oh, and sometimes you can negotiate down the reikin (key money) and shikikin (deposit) and kagi-henkou (key changing fees).
 
oh well, I've never negotiated before. It'll be quite tricky to dodge these fees.

I have a question regarding money though: I know that receiving another stipend next to MEXT is not allowed, but how about some help from parents or maybe saved up money? That shouldn't cause any problems, right?
 

Of course not. The conditions only state that you can't receive another SCHOLARSHIP, not another source of income. You can work part-time job and earn money here if you can - though you have to declare income and pay taxes if you exceed certain yearly threshold. Scholarships are not counted as income, so they are tax-exempted.

How is everyone going with preparations to go? I am on a flight on the 26th September. Yay! anyone looked into the usual stuff such as setting up cell phones and bank accounts?

Which city/university are you gonna be in?

So far I've rented an apartment for a month while I'm looking for a long-term apartment. Haven't looked into phones/bank account yet but I guess I'll have to set up a post bank account for the scholarship. As for phones, I think it requires the residence card and a credit card. I'll look into it as soon as I got those sorted.

Well I applied for university nomination, and have not passed the first screening yet, which will be released around March 4-6th, but just reading through all 15 pages of this thread was quite thrilling. Reading as everyone waits and waits, the sheer anxiety, the patience... then finally reading that they got the confirmation from MEXT was so cool. Made me smile. Anyway, I'm in this boat now, and boy it's gonna be a long journey...

So is anyone gonna come along this journey with me? Fellow fall2013 'university nomination' applicants?

I am new on JREF and I am also a 'university nomination' applicant for the MEXT, at Keio.
I have been told that the university would recommend me since mid-february. So did you pass the first screening of your university?
I am not sure I will be able to keep waiting until summer to get to know the final decision of MEXT

Anyway I hope we will get through!
 
Yayy another person to wait with!! Yes I passed the first screening and have my interview via phone this Friday night!! I'm kind of nervous, but excited at the same time since this is my opportunity to really show my passion. But perfectly articulating my research project idea is still very difficult. After the interview, I'll be looking towards the "end of April" for the results of the second screening.

Did you pass the first screening, or rather what stage of the process are you in right now? **Edit: Oh so you're completely finished with the nominating process and just waiting on the final say from MEXT itself? Did you read through this whole thread, because it seems to me that you have a 95+ percent chance of final approval if the university nominates you.

I just don't know, and I'm sure it depends on the university, how many applicants are sent off to MEXT for approval in relation to the amount of scholarship slots. For example there are 15 slots at Waseda, so I wonder if they will send 15 plus "alternates", only 15, or more than 15 off to MEXT for approval.

Did you get any idea of your chances, or ask how many applicants Keio nominated to MEXT?

I believe I am already accepted at Keio University. I had an interview with 3 professors of Keio who came in France in the end of January (it was scheduled just after an exam xD). It went well since I got a e-mail to say I was nominated as one of the candidates for the MEXT.
I have then sent the new form for this application, which came to the university 1 week after the deadline... thanks to my country's postal service. But the form seems fine to them.
So now I am just waiting for the final answer of MEXT. I am looking forward any mail from Japan >_<
 
For the chances to get the MEXT I don't know more than all that is written on this thread.
I know a few people who go to Japan in France (My engineering school is a part of a group of schools which send several people each year in a double deegree program). Basically, for each one of the Japanese universities such as Keio or Doshisha, there is one student from each engineering school of this group to be awarded the MEXT. Meaning 6 or 7 for France in one japanese university. I think then it's more for the US.
 
I see. Well don't worry Rmi, it seems to me that once your university recommends you, you have a very good chance. Maybe MEXT just does some final research like background checks and whatnot, to make sure you're not a criminal or to verify the information given in your application.

I did my interview and feel really nervous about how I did. I think I made some mistakes, but also want to stay confident and hopeful. The application says "end of April" as the time by which they will notify me of my results. It's gonna be a long 7 weeks!!
 
Hello again!
I just received my letter of definitive admission for study at Keio Daigaku! This is so great.
But no further notice about the MEXT Scolarship, so I am still waiting.
 
Oh whew that's a relief, but yeah still the MEXT suspense is the worst. It's given me this kind of anxiety that I don't know how to cope with. Do you have backup plans set in place in case you don't get MEXT, or are you just gonna study at Keio using your own funds? Anyway I'm sure you're gonna get it don't worry at all!!
 
I have some little french scolarships but none of them can reach the level of the MEXT. So I don't really know how I am going to handle this if I don't get it.
I know what you mean for the expectation... Even if it seems that my case is practically solved the waiting is still killing me so for you it must be horrible. But hold on!
