Hey everyone! I would like to share a site if you wanna learn Japanese and help you prepare for your move. Maybe this is already an off-topic thing but anyway, I got this from my Nihongo teacher and it's really fun! NIHONGO e縺ェ - Portal for Learning Japanese -

Congratulations again to everyone and hope to see you guys in Japan.

congrats one and all for the confirmation thank you iken for the japanese lesson site i have already joined classes here will get back once my papers reach me

Greetings everyone.
This is my first post. I'm from Indonesia and I have accepted to IDEC Hirodai and will start to study there in about this October.
Congratulation for all who have accepted as well... hope to see you in Japan!

Got the papers today. Looks like I'm going to need a haircut and a photo shooting session

Did you guys apply for a flight yet? In my case I think they state 25th Sept - 05th Oct as possible arrival dates, but on the website it says this is for when you're going to join a dorm and that you might arrive as early as 18th Sept. I'd probably like to rent on my own so I want to arrive around 18th.
I'm pondering over even taking their flight offer. It's just one way so in the end it will probably cost me more to return home don't you think?

Example: One-way from Tokyo to Vienna costs about 600k Yen. Now considering we have to pay taxes on the flight they sponsor it'll probably end up costing me about 700-800k in flight cost for 1x going and 1x returning.

If I just get a private two way ticket instead I would pay roughly the same but I would be more flexible not to mention that it basically saves the government of Japan money while it does not increase my costs.

What do you think? I'm tending towards just flying privately.

Hey guys.

I received my visa documents so I'll be applying for my visa at the end of this month. I've also filled out the form for the air ticket, and I'll be arriving in Japan on 12th September. When are you people planning to arrive in Japan?

You arrive that early? I think I read somewhere that the earliest I can get a flight for is 18th Sept.
I'm not sure when to arrive yet. Going to apply for Visa this week, maybe next.

I thought that sounded a bit early to me to0, I mean I would actually like to get there that early and settle in well before school starts so Im a little jealous!

I think I won't be flying over until much later, about the 25th Sept. because Im currently in Korea and have to fly back home and organise my visa a little later on...

What are you all doing about accommodation? Dormitories? I was told if you get there too early the dorm rooms will not be available yet...

Well you'll get a return ticket when you finish your program and leave Japan for your country. However, if you decide to stay to go to work or get another scholarship other than MEXT, you'll be ineligible for the return ticket. Why buy a ticket on your own?

Really? In my documents it never mentions a return flight.

Keio University opens on 24th Sept, and we have orientation ceremony and welcome party and other stuff between 15-20 Sept. That is why I'm arriving on 12th Sept. Anyway, from what I gather, different Universities have different arrangements about when international students arrive. I have applied for the University dorms, but they allot the dorms at their own discretion. So I'll get to know around August what dorm I've been allotted.

I think what they mean is that if you stop your studying and return home for good, you can't get the return ticket. In fact, MEXT Students return for vacation all the time. But if you miss the signing deadline (you basically have to sign every month), you cannot get the scholarship for the month. So you can leave for at most 2 months; kinda inconvenient if you plan to do some internship abroad or something.

you're a lifesaver thepie.

I definitely owe you a couple of drinks

Glad to hear that. You'll probably bump into me soon since Titech is small and you're in the same dept with mine (if I remember correctly, CS?)

Yep CS dept

Would be funny if we became neighbours. Im looking for a place near ookayama as well

That's true. As for me, dorm rooms can only be occupied by October so I had to take care of my accommodations in September. I booked a single room at an in-campus lodging before I move to the dorm.

What are you all doing about accommodation? Dormitories? I was told if you get there too early the dorm rooms will not be available yet...

Did you guys figure out your flights yet? I have to fill in a excel file from my University but it's a bit weird. It asks to fill in the arrival date and the places of departure and entrance. Isn't that supposed to be coming from them? I guess they just want to know when I want to arrive, right?
I filled in 25th Sept and Narita.

Also about housing, right now I'm looking at booking an apartment in one of those guest houses. Not really a fan of those but I need something to stay in while searching for a real apartment.

I had to fill out a flight ticket form on a website. I filled 12th Sept as the date of my arrival and Narita as the destination.

I've also been assigned my dorm by the University. It's in Hiyoshi, Yokohama. Hope to meet you people around there.

Filled in my arrival date as 25th sept. Kinda late but fits the schedule I guess.
I'll be renting one of those monthly apartments for a month or so until I find my own place.

Today I had the first dream about the departure, I guess now its really getting close. I'm so excited.

Hi frna, I'm gonna be arriving on Sept.28, as what my professor had suggested. Honestly, I wanted it to be sooner, but he said he will be out of the country for awhile (actually, he's visiting MY country hehe) and will be back after the 27th.

Hrmmm, are you really renting a monthly apartment? I think that would be a bit expensive. Have you talked to your supervisor about your lodging?

Ahh, I had that kind of dream too, but it was before I knew about the results. I dreamt about being outside a convenience store and feeling so confused reading signs written in Kanji...I guess that means I gotta be ready with my Japanese language skills!
