Uncle Frank's absence

Wish you well Frank, I am new here so I don't know you as well as the others, but even in this short time I've noticed that you bring a levity to this forum that is a breath of fresh air in the smothering intellectualism that often exists here

First off, Frank says hello to everyone.

He has had some problems with his leg and has been in a lot of pain. He goes for an MRI tomorrow, which will hopefully give them a better idea of what's going on. He says he's been on a lot of pain medication, which is causing him to be very groggy and out of it, so that is why he hasn't been on the forum.

I certainly wish him the best. He's been a great friend to me.

I will continue to update as I get information.
Hope he gets better soon. Someone smuggle a laptop with internet connection to him in hospital, then he can while away the hours with us. :-)

I'd like to chime in here and hope Uncle Frank gets well also. He is a beacon of light to this forum.

I have to confess I did always secretly disagree with him that JREF had drifted too far into J-rock or anime-land and therein lost sight of its more serious moorings. 😌

Wow !

I didn't realize that Frank was out of action for a while - been tied up myself for a few days.

Needless to say - Get Well, Frank !!!! (That's an order !)

I need a few 'geezers' round me, you know !

Best Wishes,

ニ淡ニ停?。ニ停?

(P.S. Do you need any of us to look after your avatars, while you're away ?)

Yeah, it's kind of dull without him. I'm sure he'll be back, though. :-)

Update on Frank!

Heard from him just now. He got the results of his MRI and it is a herniated disk causing the leg pain. He is going to be seeing a surgeon soon and hopefully, he will get this taken care of. It's causing him a great deal of pain.

We wish you well, Frank! 🌹

Kirei...let him know that I said only whimps and sailors go to see doctors!

:? Oh yeah...Frank was a swabbie wasn't he!

Get well soon Frank! :p

Herniated disk ?

I've never had a herniated disk before, but had suffered from several strong cases of severe back pain that immobilzed me for days. It first struck when I was still in high school; I was supposed to run with this mock M-1 rifle and my thighs suddenly would not work; it slowed me down so that I was way behind my buddies... The doctor of orthopedics told me, "Your back is crooked, but only to an average degree of crookedness. Nothing to worry !" That one statement from him made me a firm disbeliever of western orthopedic medicine. Instead of talking to me straight; "Your case is incurable, will affect you entire life, will make you invalid for long periods, striking at random, unless you take proper corrective excercise and watch out for your back at all times." He failed to do that, that ignorant piece of bull-shitting doctor.

One wonderful find that I would like to share is the wonderful wooden italian chair that I am sitting on right now. Normally, that is comparing with my other long periods of concentrated immersion at the desk, I should have become bedridden again from the muscle tension build-up in the sitting position for the past 10 months. This miracle making chair is the only rational explanation for the lack of such back problems. I have tried all kinds of chairs due to my sensitive back, but none even came close to this one. It was gotten for $250 in 1991, but considering the losses from back problems, that's peanuts. I'll try to locate the mfr. if possible. In the meantime, wish you the best of luck in finding a skilled surgeon should you take the surgical solution.

Edit: Yes, I do realized you are suffering from something greater than what I've had to suffer. And yes, a good chair is only half the solution. Getting away from the desk, to go on a regular excersie routine involving stretching such as calisthenics, to go out for a breath of fresh air, to dangle yourself from a tree or gymnast's bar or parallel; all these things help to keep the back happy and purring. Wish you speedy recovery, Uncle Frank ! :)

Well, I was a sailor, and hey, nothing wrong with seeing the ol' sawbones! I also wish nothing but the best for Uncle Frank! The board just isn't the same without him!

Kirei, thanks for the update.
Frank, get well! I hope your pain goes away fast.
We all miss you.

Since I don't pray, I shall do the next best thing..

I shall order him asian hookers to wave their long silky black hair at his bed and along his leg to ease the pain...

hmmm..

CURSE THIS EMPTY WALLET!

...oh yeah... have a sad looking dog.

I'm not Frank himself, but i would say that IS definitley THE answer to his prayer... *hiding under the chair of his* j/k j/k Msr. White, just to cheer him up a bit. Nothing serious !

About the 'ease' part, it almost sounded like 'tease the tes---' *rolls over in a fit of madness*

Thanks for the update Kirei. Really starting to miss the old bugger. We need his back. Hope all goes well with the surgeon. 🙂

Sounds more like he needs his back. :D

My mom had a slipped disk in her back years ago. I remember she couldn't take much weight and we had to get an automatic for her to drive because it was too much pain to shift. I'm not sure if that's the same thing as a herniated disk. Anyway, I hope the surgery goes well and he recovers quickly.

Keeping Backs Healthy, What Can Be Done ?

Too late, Mycernius, the snowball has taken to the slopes ... :D

Oh, I don't miss the old bugger, or his bad back, I just miss his healthy back. Speaking of backs, we all need our healthy backs back, that's been snatched by walking on two. Why can't we go back to quadripedal walking ? I've heard Sophia Lauren did her morning cat yawns to keep her back in good shape. Several things we can do to relive the undue stress our backs are getting.

1. hang on a tree for 15 minutes every day.
2. walk on all fours for 1 hour every day like the gorillas' do with their knuckle walks.
3. devise a special bed where we can easily change into & out of a dangling sleep posture, either head up or down.
4. legally require from an early age to regularly go on a back-stretching bench / bed to prevent any major compression of the disc before any gets herniated.

Well, I really don't care what happens to the surgeon. I just hope he does a good job if he has to break his back in so doing. I could say all good sugeons go to heaven, while the bad ones burn in hell. Better do a good job, or esle ...

Question: DO they have an artificial disc that can replace a natural disc ? One that can last for decades, remains flexible, keeps the nerve bundles intact under all imaginable stress ? How much does a surgery cost to replace one disc, parts & labor ? I have at least one bad disc that's been ailing me for years, always lurking in the back waiting to strike.

@ Frank, I hope you're doing well. I bet the doctors are blaming your prolonged hours of forum activity for all the pain. Get well soon ! 🎈

Hey, hey, hey! Those are fighting words right there my friend! Not all western doctors are that bad. Take the one I used to go see. He four years ago he told me bluntly why I was sick all the time and had health problems. "You need to change your lifestyle, if you don't you'll have type two diabeties, and you'll die of a heart-attack in less than three years." Let's just say that doctor saved my life. He actual told me the problem, and what I needed to do to fix it. So not all doctors are bad.

Doc:ramen:😄

PS: I MISS FRANK DAMNIT!!!😭😭😭

I know, Doc; there are the good ones and the bad ones wherever you go. I was just out of luck, and you struck gold. I only have a major problem with that particular one, who also misdiagnosed my brother, damaging his whole life, so... Yeah, everybody's different. But why me ! This should go to the bummer & ranting thread...

Sorry, Frank. Here should be only encouraging words for you ! Get well ! 🙂

You should have sued him for malpractice. I think there was enough evidence there to get him for that. Yes, this should go in my rant thread. That's what it's there for. Speaking of which somebody better sticky it pretty soon or I'm going on a manhunt! Getting back on topic, I WANT YOU BACK FRANK!!! Your humor was great, and you were the only other person that gave me rep points! (Just playing with the guys that gave me my rep. You're all on my buddy list for it!:-)) JUST GET WELL FRANK, AND COME BACK VERY SOON!!!:-)
