I think that lots of Okinawans must be happy about this, however it might not be that good for the economics of Okinawa. I'm not really familiar with this so if someone could add some more information about it.

Basically this issue has been the biggest thorn in the US-Japanese defense relations for the past 30 years. They just don't want the base there and have been pushing hard for it to be removed. For the past few years there has been a tentative deal to relocate the marines to a base in an remote part of the islands, but local opposition seems to have scuttled that too. the deal to remove the marines was supposed to be based on a relocation.... but this decision basically ends that due to budget pressures.
