Typeing in katakana?

Well I am haveing a heck of a time finding a way to type japanese.
How does one go about doing it? Do you need to change you'r OS language or use a plug in or what?
Any help would be nice.

I am using Japanese Windows XP with Japanese 109 keyboard so no problem for me.

Well found a plug in for word that turns romaji into hiragan, katakana or even kanji. Pretty nice.
