Minna-san Konnichiwa. Ogenki desu ka? In the last thread I was trying to see if the Japanese and English titles are translations but only to find out that they're not. In this thread, I'm going to show you sentences/phrases in both Japanese and English, and if there's a better Japanese/English translation please show it to me. It's a thread of improvement.

I'll ignore the English for now. And say simply the Japanese is incomplete. Because to use 表現する correctly the sentence has to have something that is expressed by a "free translation". It doesn't refer to "to express" in the sense of making visible. For that you would use あらわす。

表現 means to put forth a statement, feeling, expression, idea, opinion, perception, etc. etc.

Then he told me "All threads in Nihongo forum are improvement threads. If you want to see 'improvement', start from yourself".

I don't know exactly what you're asking but we get all manner of threads. From people giving out information on any aspect of the language without necessarily expecting a response to members requesting translation without any intention of ever learning a word of Japanese themselves...Although in between with a mix of question, statement and attempt is usually most productive and to the advantage of all of us who dare get involved.

Oh, and please ASK politely what you'd like to have done next time. In other words, don't continue phrasing your requests as "In this thread you will be showing me XYZ" as if someone here owes you anything.

From people giving out information on any aspect of the language without necessarily expecting a response to members requesting translation without any intention of ever learning a word of Japanese themselves...Although in between with a mix of question, statement and attempt is usually most productive and to the advantage of all of us who dare get involved.

Hummm............

I think what Epigene means is we want members who don't just ask and take from JREF, and give nothing back. Be a part of the community and post in other areas and maybe help other members if possible. We like to see members attempt to figure things out on their own and then someone helps them correct their attempts. If your only posts are for someone to do your work for you, it comes across as kind of selfish. A member who shows us they are really trying on their own and doing some work and thinking on their own, gets more help. The forum should be a community of members sharing and helping each other, not just demanding answers and translations. We have many members who join, get their answer about something, and never return. When that happens too often, old time members get discouraged and feel why bother to help. If you show you are making an effort at trying to help yourself, others will feel better about helping you.

Ahh, OK...Apparently I was in a hurry and assumed you were quoting - epigene-san - her - there.

I'll take a look or someone else may know a more elegant translation for 'improvement threads' in English. 'Self-improvement' at least is 自己啓発.
