Translation on Japanese sword

Hi,

could anyone help with translation of what I think are Japanese characters on a WWI / WWII sword. They are written on both sides of the Habaki.

Many thanks for any help or advice
 
These are both rotated 90 degrees clockwise, would be properly oriented with the blade pointing up

First side says 天皇 (emperor) 昭和八年 (Showa year 8, 1933)
Second has the name 山本太郎 - Yamamoto Tarō

Thank you very much for the translation nice gaijin, the date fits with what I so far believe may be the sword's origin.
