A topic that comes up quite frequently in the Tourist sub-thread of the Practical section is rail travel.

There have been several posts recently from users wanting to know things like:

- is the Japan Rail pass worth it;
- how much is a ticket from X to Y;
- how long does it take to get to Z;
- are there other rail passes.

I thought that having a sticky thread covering rail transport would be helpful for people planning their trips. We could put in links to Japan Rail's own site - where timetables and fares can be downloaded and other gems of advice from those of us who've been already.

I get the impression from reading (and replying) to posts that may people find the prospect of travelling around Japan a bit daunting. If we can provide good advice and show how easy it is, I'd hope that it will help a lot of people.

Anyway, I'm happy to start off such a thread if that helps, but I will wait for feedback as to whether it's viewed as helpful.

Sounds like a good idea to me, but I lack the knowledge. If you know the system well and would be willing to write up a summary/guide, then we can just stick it for you.

Hi,

I've posted my starter on the rail travel guide. Sorry it's taken a while, but I've been a bit busy lately.

Please let me know if it's OK, or whether you want changes. If not, then I'd be grateful if you could make it sticky.

Looks good to me. Lots of useful information in there! And people can still add information about other lines if they want. Cheers!
