hi all, do japanese usually use the informal or formal verbs when they talk? like would you usually say tabenakatta or tabemasen deshita?

Yes.

filler, filler, filler.

In formal situations, such as with a stranger, teacher, etc., they would use the formal ones. In informal situations, such as with a family member, close friend, etc., they would use the informal ones.
 
there are formal and informal ways to say things for formal an informal situations. Both are used on a daily basis. Is this not common sense?
 
well is it ok to just learn the informal japanese?

Final answer to that would be no, unless you plan just to speak to Japanese friends only. However if you want to study with any degree of seriousness you need to learn the polite forms, first preferably.
