I've heard from some American and Japanese people that you can get rejected from a lot of onsen if you have a tattoo of any kind. So, if you have a tattoo on your arm for instance, would you be able to cover it with an armband or something? Also, are there onsen where people with non-yakuza style tattoos can still enter?

Depends on the onsen, just let them know ahead of time. I have a friend who was military and she was able to go still.

my roommate has a tatoo and we've never been torned away from an onsen.
