Taking photos and videos

Is it allright if i take a video or picture of interesting scene in public? Or maybe is i see someone interesting ?
I tried to take pictures of two young female japanese dancer in front of an electronic store in Akihabara...but suddenly one of then crossed her hand and shout to me : Dame ! Dame !!...woow i was sooo embarresed

well, it's not alright if someone says that to you. If you want to prevent any confusion or embarrassment, you could simply ask "shashin wo totte mo ii desu ka?" Remember the particle "wo" sounds more like "oh"

"Shashin o tottemo ii desuka ?"
Shashin = Picture, totte = take, and moii desuka = may I ?
Picture take may I = May I take a picture ?

Possible answers could be:
Hai, doozo = Yes, please do so
Hai, kamaimasen = Yes (you may), I do not mind
Un = Yeah
Hai = Yes

koolkool, that's exactly what it means.

dame literally means "no good," but if someone uses it you can take it to mean "don't do that" Also, if you ask them and they say "iie" and/or wave their hand in front of their nose (palm facing to the side), it means "no." Lastly, the crossing the arms, making an "X" in front of their face is called "batsu," and means essentially the same thing as "dame."

Chances are, people will either say "hai" or "iie," and that's all you really need to listen for.

when i was in harajuku... couldn't now where to look first, of course... people warned me harajuku girls are not really happy if people take photos of them (i totally understand why)... but i really wanted.. especially when i saw one group of girls.. they were so interesting, but too scary i didn't dare to come closer even to ask if i may take a pic

that's my point too! they are dressed to (impress, lol) drag your interest, and they are not hiding (but exactly opposite), so why cant we take picture... i guess it is quite annoying to see lots of stupid tourists taking pictures, but what else they can expect?
i remember those girls looked like vampires.. good thing it was sunny day..

Word dame

This word made me curious, is it an appropriate word for saying no or it is a rude word to say no?..peace.. ..is it the same with 'Dame, desu' ?

It depends on the situation, as it doesn't exactly translate to "no."

"Dame desu" is more formal, if you were going to use the word, I would recommend being polite about it.

Dame is more like "don't do that" or "that's bad" rather than "No."

and as Nice Gaijin said up there^^ "Dame desu" is just a polite way of saying "dame." It's like the difference between "yeah" and "yes" I guess ...

I wonder how the rest of the world feels when Japanese go on tours...if I remember correctly they are quite infamous for taking cameras and lots of photos.

exactly, then it must be part of the attitude, i guess...

lol, i just remembered, in Paris last year, i visited Louvre, and couldnt get close to Mona Lisa cause of bunch of Japanese and Chinese people taking photos.. good thing i didnt care, and saw lots of other interesting things..

Its one thing to take a picture of a building or a statue - its quite another to take a picture of a PERSON. Just because they are out looking good, doesnt neccesarily mean they are interested in having their picture taken. They have no idea what you intend to use the picture for - you may say its because they look cute, but you could be using it to make fun of them. This is the internet age, and any guy with a camera and webspace can turn a simple photo into an international sensation depending on whats done to the picture. Obviously this is an extreme example, but just think of it from THEIR point of view.

And really - it is a bit invading their privacy, especially if you just start snapping pictures of them.

If you really want to take a picture - do so in a sly way, and dont be overly obvious about it. I got many pictures of harajuku folks by simple turning off flash, tilting the lcd to where I could see what I was shooting, holding the camera down and just rapid shooting. Out of 25 or so rapid shots - youll get more than a few good ones. Same with taking video.

It's kind of the same with anime conventions, game conventions and comic book conventions in any other country. People cosplay because that's part of it, but just because their dressed up doesn't mean they want their picture taken, if you just ask them nicely if you can take a picture they appriciate it more then just taking a picture.

I've gotten a few good pictures of cosplayers, but I won't post them because I told them I wouldn't show them to anyone because they don't want them to be seen by others.

Haha, that's exactly what I did too at Harajuku. I got a good number of pics from the Baby Milo and Bape store. But the Bape store was a little harder because the shop is literally an underground 20 x 20 x 10 foot box.
