A new commercial development will debut at Tokyo's Takanawa Gateway Station this Thursday. The goal is to transform the area into a cutting-edge "city" featuring autonomous vehicles and as a centre for global academic institutions and startups. Takanawa Gateway City, a ¥600 billion ($3.3 billion) project covering 845,000 square meters, is a long-awaited redevelopment by JR East. The complex will combine residential, commercial, and cultural spaces.

The first phase kicks off on Thursday with the opening of twin 160-meter towers and a new exit for JR Takanawa Gateway Station — which first opened in 2020 — providing direct access to the complex's face, known as Gateway Park. The two towers anchor the development, with commercial hubs surrounding the station. There will be around 200 stores spread out across the complex, which are to open in phases through 2026. Scholars' hubs and business centers will bring together over 100 startups, and academic institutions such as the University of Tokyo and the National University of Singapore. The two buildings will include convention centers and office spaces as well as a day care center that is slated to open in April. Takanawa Gateway City is also hoping to attract foreign tourists with a large travel center and a JW Marriott luxury hotel.
