Survey finds Japan ranking high among Americans considering life abroad

As more Americans consider moving abroad, Japan has emerged as one of the most sought-after destinations for relocation, according to a new report by Country Navigator, a training platform focused on global workplaces. The report described 2025 as a record year for Americans looking to leave the United States. At the same time, the U.S. think tank, the Brookings Institution, said the country experienced net migration losses in 2025 for the first time in decades.

Japan ranked sixth among destinations for relocation-related searches by Americans, with about 49,400 searches recorded. Interest in the country was high at the initial research stage. But the report said practical issues, especially the language barrier, caused Japan to drop down the list once people seriously considered moving abroad.


While Japan, especially Tokyo, ranks highly for quality of life, the country is viewed less positively for its work culture.

I tried going to a Sushi buffet in Norway once. Its really good! I'm not American, but i can concur on that aspect interms of the food culture is great!

Japan des not yet have a retirement visa like say Thailand, Malayasia or Portugal. I think most underestimate languge difficulty and related lonliness, let alone the beauracracy or issues with their Akiya. In other words most westerners would hate retirement there IMHO. I strongly recommend somewhere with more English and a retire visa for most westerners. Living and vacations are different.

That said I will retire there and am looking forward to it even without spousal decree. Some at our Japanese school who lived and married there are doing the same. Nice gaijin would do well and should consider it particularly if the yen does not strenghten. I also figure more brain exercise as I age
 
Oddly my wife has no interest in retiring to Japan. Though she did admit if she were widowed and on her own -- depending on what the kids were up to -- she might want to return.
 
Some Japanese do like like alp the social obligations. nechinechi. mounting etc. My brother in law is working at a Japanese embassy these days and is talking about retiring abroad for that reason preferrably in the west. Not sure how a Japanese government pension would be enough for that, I will be interested to see what he does. He is only 50 so he has more time than I.
 
I agree that most Americans would find Japan a very bad match for them after the initial bout of novelty wears off. Living in Japan long-term is not a trivial task for someone from abroad, especially if said person moves there without knowing the local language first. Even more so if that person does not have a history of living abroad or acute familiarity of East Asia.

Moving abroad to Japan for retirement seems like a bold and risky move to me. You'd have to really think it out. For one thing, you'd have to figure out how to navigate healthcare. It's a very different system than the USA has, and the language barrier has very serious consequences.
 
There's also a certain type of American that I often encounter on social media (I'm not referring to anyone on JREF) who sees Japan as a homogeneous paradise relatively free from dark-skinned people and who rails against Japan accepting the 'wrong type of immigrant' (while assuming that they are the 'right type of immigrant').
 
Yeah there's a very clear pattern of posts I see on things like facebook from media outlets that are very clearly intended to stoke those kinds of notions of Japan, and bring out the latent nationalist tendencies in unwitting users

True, although most of the white racists in Japan usually kept their gobs shut until recently. It's almost as if something has happened that has encouraged them to spout their obnoxious views.
