Social Question on the "self", please help

A while back I remember reading about a terminology that Japanese people use to describe what a person is in public, or their "public face" and who they are in private with their friends or close ones "inner face?".

And I was wondering if anyone is familiar with this idea/terminology and could help me find the actual words for it.
