Uhh, did you read his post? Assault, Sexual Assault, Destruction of property, drug possession/use are all crimes, all but one carry jail time in most nations, some come with the death penalty.

If there has to be one disillusioned Japanese freak on the boards, it would be you josh. Its always amusing to read the posts that you make, but the truth being that if you were half successful you would be living in Japan, rather than making a yearly pilgrimage to stay for a few weeks, blow your years savings, and return to America for another year of scrimping up a plane ticket fare.

If one only makes short term trips to Japan then relating to situations with longer term stay such as a study abroad program at university in Tokyo. A vacation (even for a month) and a year long trip are entirely different and unless you are in Japan for a long period of time it isn't possible to relate to the problems that do occur from time to time. I don't need "free hugs" or "new friends" and highly question your sincerity due to your past behavior, but I'll accept your apology Josh and hope that this thread doesn't get derailed anymore.


Anyway, enough of that. I believe Nice Gaijin is aware of some of my "horror stories" almost all relating to other international students, and I'm sure he has witnessed a few things as well himself. I'm sure many students who go abroad witness things like this. Although Japan seems to have its own pool of people who create fantasy go abroad for a year, and seem to have every intention of causing as much chaos and destruction as possible which quickly reflects on the entire study abroad group. I don't want to say "I've seen it all" because that would jinx me I'm sure, but even during my last week of finals in Japan I had my camera stolen by another study abroad student, who I had to report to the college during the class break. This same student, during the same class then comes up and assaults me out of anger for reporting him while I'm talking to the teacher about the final. It was mostly trying to shove and push me (fairly poorly at that), but for this to happen at one of the top universities was absolutely shocking. Even the teacher couldn't believe what happened, and after that the student still stood in the door way screaming profanities trying to incite me to go after him. I had this guy following me the rest of the week and this was my most difficult week which all my grades depended on so I had no time to go to the police, only the college. As far as I know the college did next to nothing, even with the teacher as a witness, and the fact that this student had been a problem numerous times in the past. I regret not having the time to go to the police, but it was literally that and a bunch of paper work and hassle or focus on what I felt was important, which were my grades. After the semester I did hear from the college they were in the "process" of something, but there were no specifics. The college is notorious for huge controversy and problems in the past, so really I shouldn't be too surprised.

My main reason for posting this thread, is that I'm headed back to Japan for yet another year of study. I also intend to work towards graduate school in Japan as well. That means I'll be dealing with whackos that I have run into in the past like those above and plenty others from time to time. Therefore, I'm quite curious as to the methods that others have dealt with these types of people. The above example is more extreme, the lesser example is maybe a 35 year old pervert who chases after the 18 year old ichinensei girls because he believes they all love foreign guys and will sleep with anyone. NiceGaijin has already found how difficult it is to not have other's actions rub off on your reputation (especially if you are associated in the same general study group), so I'm very curious to other courses of action for "damage control" if it could be called as such.

While I don't condone it, physical action seems very effective.
When I was studying in a Japanese high school we had a young German lad come over. He knew no Japanese, but was (to but it simply) full of himself, and everytime someone took interest in him it boosted his ego to phenomenal proportions.
One day while in the toilets he noticed the Japanese student in there had a "normal" neck-tie (everyone had clipons as it was what the school provided), went up to him and said something like "hey! where did you get that tie" in English.
So we have this German guy who after a month in the school already had a reputation for having a huge ego, annoying allot of people by thinking he was Gods gift to Japan, now in a toilet pointing, speaking English to a guy who doesn't know English and something interesting happened.
The Japanese guy, unsurprisingly, freaked out a little and gave him a lovely left-right.
The German guys ego deflated and he learnt some humility, manners and became far more sensible. The blood nose and black eye was funny too.

Edit. As someone else said what makes allot of people push the limits of tolerance, is a mix that they are separated from the people they know so the chances of their antics reaching them are far lower, and that Japanese people are non-confrontational - they avoid conflict with other people and that only gives them confidence.

I quite like the video on Youtube of an Australia being an idiot in what looks like Shibuya, throws a bike into a truck, and the truck driver drags him (with a few punches) to the koban. You can bet that he is a little more sensible when he goes out. Or at least you can hope...

He asked him about his tie and he got punched? Arrogant jerk or not, he didn't deserve that unless he did something very aggressive like went up to him yelled at him to show his tie or grabbed the tie from him. I don't know the situation though.

From what I have seen getting physical is a great way to make a situation MUCH worse. Take the situation in class where the student came at me, the short short version is that I simply deflected a couple grabs and shoves and stepped back and yelled STOP. He then went to the door and started trying to incite more, and I ignored him. I'm not saying to not defend yourself as need be, but I pretty much had to make a split second reaction choice after knocking his hands away what to do next. I stepped back and let him make the choice. I could have easily SERIOUSLY hurt this guy, and probably had the right to do so in self defense. (to an extent) However, with all the paper work and hassle that would cause I probably would have failed at least one class because that week was so packed. I would have caused a lot more trouble for myself.

Now, I'm not saying you don't have a right to defend yourself in serious situations. What I am saying is it is a HORRIBLE idea to go looking for an excuse to do something or taking the physical route when there are other options open that may be much smarter. It depends ENTIRELY on the situation of course, and if you have to defend yourself or feel you need to you should. Just don't go looking for it. I know one guy who actually brags about getting into a total of five or more fights in Japan. None were "his fault" as he claims, but knowing the person... I highly doubt it. He literally looks for chances to start a conflict. I don't know how he didn't get deported from Japan during his stay, but it doesn't surprise me that he didn't after my experiences.

For myself, I'm looking to avoid a problem, not create a new one.

Hmmm, reading this thread has made me think a little. I'd probably be classified as a japanophile but I'm not quite sure if it's to that extent...Either way I definately want to take a trip to Japan and will in the near future. Maybe it will be an eye opener, I'm not sure. I should consider my thinking and judge wether it's rational or not. Thanks Jref forum.

I just treat Japan maniacs like everyone else. until they get loud and then all I do is ignore them or tell them to pipe down.

Rememo, I'm sure I could fall into the category of a Japanophile as well due to the amount of study and research I do. I'm simply interested in Japan, and I enjoy studying about the country and the language. It is why it is my major and it is what I hope to teach about someday as a teacher. There is nothing wrong with having an interest in something, even a strong interest, as long as it is reasonable and doesn't cross the line into an obsessed and warped fantasy that doesn't reflect reality. It is the creation of a false warped sense of a country based on these fantasy and pop-culture images that is a problem, as it would be in any country's case.

What you consider to be a reality is in my mind's eye a warped fantasy and my reality is what you would consider to be a warped fantasy so I can't imagine you having much success in the classroom.

I teach more people about Japan a week than you'll teach in your lifetime

I was so poor when I was a kid, I had no friends and nobody cared about me back then.
