Sleeping more people in a room than there are beds?

I know that in the US I have had no trouble, in attempts to save money, getting a single room and had people sleep on the ground without trouble.

Would this be able to work in Japan with the layout of the hotels and the rooms?

The hotel rooms in Japan are very very small especially in Tokyo. Even the bed they say is "double" barely fits two people. My family of 4 tried to share a room and it was pretty uncomfortable and difficult but we saved money. We stayed in very nice hotels too.

Most of the hotels I have stayed in were so small that it barley fit the bed in the room. Also a lot of hotels charge per person so getting one room might not be much help.

I'm guessing it would be small compared to the ones in the US. Generally everything is smaller but as Terry said some hotels charge by person. In Japan, it's better to buy to be comfortable and not to be cheap. Because then the saying ' You buy what you pay for' bites you in the butt.

Ok, here is a picture of what $40 per person got us in Chitose-Sapporo area. The bed was hard, the pillow felt like a rock, the room stunk like smoke and the floor felt dirty. The room was very small. Your gonna need to be a trooper! I spend a lot of time camping in the open when I hunt, I would of felt a little more comfortable on the ground in the woods. But what the heck, I was in Japan and loving it!

I remember me and a buddy went to Tokyo on Vacation, I rented out a nice room 8000 yen 80$ q night and snuk him in when the front desk girl wasnt looking. We had to pull missions when leaving the hotel so that the front desk girl wouldn't see us, but when we were out in the clear we wouldn't return until late at night. We split the cost 40 each.

that is what i did at some hotels in roppongi. they caught on after a couple days - cuz there is only one main entrance/exit in the main vestibule- but since they are japanese, they didnt confront me or my g/f, whom i went with, about it. expensive hotels though, like 70-150 USD a night for a decent (non-capsule) hotel. u could save LOTS of money by staying in a capsule hotel, but its insanely tiny.. dunno if u know exactly what it is.. but its like 30 or less a night.

heh when I checked into Kimi Ryokan they enthused about the fact that we would be in a 3 person room even though there were only 2 of us and weren't we oh so lucky to be getting such a big room.

Of course, it was tiny.
