The biggest expectation I had when I first came here, was that Japanese people weren't as ignorant (on the whole) as Americans. After living here collectively for 2 1/2 years, I know this is utterly false. Japanese people are just as unknowledgeable as Americans. In some cases, worse. I find most Americans lack general information about the rest of the world, but Japanese people have some crazy ideas about Japan and the rest of the world. I've had two different people ask me if thunder is as loud in America as it is in Japan....

I dont know if its just me or general knowledge seems to be a dying thing.

I'm so glad I met my girlfriend, shes from Tokyo but shes not promiscuous. She has beautiful, white, straight teeth (due to some kind of wire brace which cost a fortune apparently). Shes fairly shy but also pretty adventurous, if I have the gall to do something, she'll get in and do it too.

The problem with stereotypes is that there is always exceptions, but on the whole its about right. My biggest 'shattered expectation' was the lack of general knowledge, I almost shat myself when we had a bunkasai and they assembled their own stands, had one guy almost kill himself with an electric drill and these shonky stands held together with tape and wire wrapped around the supports

Actually thats one I can agree with.

Some of the stuff my students, adult travelled people, dont know astounds me.

A few weeks ago too high level students couldnt tell me the first man on the moon. Another girl wasked where Paris is.

LOL I just went to the site and took their test. I got 10 right. It seems as though I think that Chinese and Korean people look a lot alike!

I had that exact same image. That Japanese people were so extremely educated and knowledgeable compared to those "lazy Americans". My mind has changed in the past several years.

Breaking rules is easier, getting dances in clubs, especially in Roppongi is ridiculously simple.

ummm all I can say to that is YES YES and more YES!!!!! lol

dancing is so much fun. Firsthousepooka I definitely agree with you on the otaku thing. My email provider is otakumail.com and all my penpals (and J people in general) ask if I know what otaku means. I explain to them I didn't know what it meant when I signed up.

Oh and the sex thing, definitely not a suppressed practice, NO WAAY!
