I'm not trying to refute you, here, but rather point out a possibility:

Perhaps Japanese actors/actresses don't want to star in Hollywood movies. It could be partially chalked up to all the ethnocentrism many of the threads on these boards talk about. I dunno.

But now that I think of it, Ken Watanabe was the only Japanese actor I recognize by name (there are a few others I recognize by sight, though), and he was in Memoirs of a Geisha.

well, I've lived in Yokosuka for seven months and I wouldn't say that I have seen hot sexy Japanese females. But I have seen attractive ladies in Japan.

Some of my personal favorites are Ueto Aya, Yamada Yu and Ebi-chan. They are all very different with Ueto Aya probably being the most wholesome (at least to me).
I used to like the girl who was in the telebi dorama "densha otoko" until I saw her picks before the plastic surgery....Yikes! Same for the girl who starred in the telebi dorama "yamato na deshiko". Hers were hideous!

All I gotta say is that my female Japanese classmates were hott.
This is me and my friend Miki ... she's 17. Probably the cutest Japanese chick I know.

Here's Miki again, her friend Chika (not hot) and my other friend Kazumi. Kazumi is the most beautiful Japanese girl I know ... and me in the back lol.

Gaijin translates to "foreign person", saying "jap" is something more akin to referring to black people with the "N" word from what I have gathered.

Offtopic, but...as an American teenager, I can say from my own experience that the term 'jap' has morphed into something entirely different. People of all kinds use this term in an entirely neutral way, to identify those with Japanese blood, though its nearly always Asian-Americans who say it. It's become acceptable internet lingo too (Note the post above) You hear things like this all the time: "hey is ur friend jap too?" etc etc. It's another youth culture, abbreviation-minded thing. It does not carry anywhere near the same weight as it used to, and as the N word still does today. I will be honest though, if I heard someone refer to my mother as a Jap, I would be seriously ticked. I'm hapa, btw.

I don't know how 'jap' works into actual Japanese society.

I have many Asian and Asian-American friends, and the only place I hear or see the word "jap" used is on forums like this. It might be younger people using this word with innocent intent, but the first thing that comes to mind when I hear or see it is internment camps and WW2 propaganda. It probably isn't my place to be offended on other people's behalf, but I still think it's innapropriate, and I'd think that kids would hesitate to use it so often if they understood all the historical significance in those three letters.

I have no friends but my grandpa would say the term "Jap" often until he googled my full name, found my website, spent 30 to 40 hours on it and sent me a letter saying he'd no longer send me birthday or christmas cards.

A few things... I rewrote this... I can't figure out how to put all this.

A) I think it's a bit crass to simply label someone you know as 'not hot' read ugly, we don't care what your beauty standards are... you don't have to impress us with your tastes in women.

B) I really don't think that the two girls, especially the one you label as the most beautiful woman you've met, are full-blood Japanese... Maybe I'm nit-picking... but I think if you say you like Japanese women, they might as well come from Japan...

I don't know this to be true, it's a guess, because (baring one particular part of Japan people are well aware of), Japanese do not have these types of facial structures, and they certainly don't have the types of long and slender noses that these women do...

Correct me if I am wrong, but I'm going to wager a bet that you live in Hawaii, and that these two girls on either side of the middle are half-Japanese American highschool students.

Am I right?

There is a scene in the movie, Brother, with Kiteshi Kitano, where there is an English conversation going on in front of Kitano where one o f the antagonists uses the word jap in a derogatory way, and the end of that scene is Kitano shooting that person saying back in English, "[...] I understand `dirty Jap'. "

Maybe that's a statement being made about the word right there?

answered own question. its about availability. name a japanese actor that is fluent in english AND an established name in america
for the record though, i boycotted that movie
because initial d the movie was terrible (imo), couldn't even finish it, so already knew what to expect from spiel berg
benihana food is terrible (to me) but not because of who cooked it
but because of how it is cooked
the authentic japanese resturant i'm going to now has female sushi chef from cambodia
other main chef is from thailand
the owner is from osaka
but it tastes like tokyo to me!!!

We should all know that the word was used during the Second World War as a derogatory reference to the Japanese. For the record, though, despite it's history, it is possible for words to devolve from derogatory to neutral or even affectionate. I've heard German Americans called "kraut" by friends, same as "Polock", "mick", or "wop." Maybe it's because "political correctness" says it's more acceptable to use ethnic slang/slurs for white people.

Anyway, point is, it's the same as the whole gaijin argument. If the word is being used negatively, then acknowledge it as inappropriate. But if people are using the word in a more neutral manner (i.e. shorthand), then maybe people should let it slide.

I will say this--- I read recently where women were polled globably about how they felt their bodies matched their own standards of beauty. A whopping zero percent of Japanese women felt that they were happy with their image and or bodies... compared to say, Brazil, where aproximately 70% of the women there felt they looked like supermodels or better.

What does this say about Japanese society?

Possibly. One of my friends from Japan was commenting how she was "too chubby" to wear a short skirt in Japan, but here in the U.S., it's alright. Now, this girl weighs maybe 115 maximum, and is just over 5'4". And I always thought women in America were overly self-conscious about their appearance!

I don't know. I say so many negative things sometimes, I didn't want to come out and say it, but I think so. I've met a lot of Japanese girls who felt that they weren't "pretty", or "cute like normal Japanese", or good enough... ones who were made to feel very bad about themselves when they were young because they were heavier...

I do think that Japanese society produces a more than normal ammount of self-concious, inadequate feeling women... but I can't say if its simply an after effect of the seemingly constant attention paid to youth, and cuteness, over beauty and age... I just don't know.
