I use Direcway... err... Hughes Net satellite internet as its called now.

Never heard of Yamal200, but I have satellite internet. I got it through Hughes Net and my provider is Wildblue. I really don't see what's so great about it, It was fast now it's really slow and when the weather is horrible I sometimes can't even get online. It has it's downfalls to me at least.

What's satellite internet,why would people subscribe to it in favor of regular wireless or DSL ?

i belive yamal200 is russian satellite internet so no suprise some of us might not know it. well, it supposted to be faster and u should be able to access it from anywhere or something like that. not 100% sure about it since I never actuly had one. I have DSL now and sometimes I miss my dialup, becuase I knew it was slow but it was always working.

internet that comes from a satellite of course, instead of from a phone line or cable

I remember they tried to launch that several years ago, but the upload was 56k dial-up modem powered. Maybe now with WIFI...

Wifi is a short-range wireless networking protocol, it is not an Internet service. I haven't heard of satellite services in the US is a long time; it seems that fiber optic is the big buzz at the moment. I remember reading about MAN (Metropolitan Area Networks) that would supposedly provide high speed wireless internet access within 70 miles of a broadcasting tower without the need for a hardline connection, but that was a couple years ago.

Seems like I poorly expressed what I wanted to say.
Actually, several years ago (when cable began in France), there was a company that was offering internet via satellite, but that was exclusively for download purpose. It seemed appealing back then (although expensive) but there was a major drawback: whenever you download something, you also need to upload, which was done by the mean of a dial up connection.
Back then, the upload speed was only 56k, which would have limited the connection a lot. Therefore, what I mean is that now, maybe there is some way to use a hot spot to upload toward a satellite (no need to connect to a parabolic antenna using a cable).

As for networks, you have MAN, WAN, LAN, TAN which have all different speeds and length, but basically what's limiting the speed of a connection is the distance from the access point and the price of the bandwith (as well as the costs required to set the cables underground).

In my case, my only two choices for internet are Satellite Internet or Dial up at 20kbps because that's all that is available in my area since not many people use internet.

I go through wildblue, but I found out about them by going through hughes net which is all satellite internet providers and it just depends on the area you live in on who you get your internet through.

Satellite is faster for downloading films than dial up and for some is there only option depending on the area that they live in,however its useless for games as it has a high latency problem and the weather is also a problem for satellite users,having said all that its a damn site better than dial up.
