A futuristic "human washing machine" that once caused a sensation at the 1970 Japan World Exposition is set to make a comeback at the upcoming Osaka Kansai Expo in April 2025. The original machine, exhibited by Sanyo Electric Co. (now Panasonic Holdings Corp.), failed to gain commercial success. However, Osaka-based showerhead maker Science Co. is now developing a new version incorporating cutting-edge technology.
This "Mirai Ningen Sentakuki" (未来人間洗濯機 human washing machine of the future) will be showcased at the Osaka Healthcare Pavilion. Visitors to the expo will have the chance to experience this futuristic device firsthand. The company is also planning to release a home-use version of the machine. "We're about 70% of the way there," said Yasuaki Aoyama, the company chairman, during a lecture on October 23. "We plan to offer 1,000 general visitors an opportunity to use it during the expo."
