no, it's not, absolutely not. Remember, the temperature of the water is ABOVE body temperature. So one pick up the heat. When you go and roll in the snow you don't really feel the cold since your body has been "slightly overheated". I agree that if you stayed one minute or so (which I won't...) you'd freeze alright.

Then after 20-15 seconds, you start to feel "very slightly" the cold of the snow. Precisely then you go back into the hot water. And you'll experience the wonderful tingling of your skin for about 20 seconds. It really feels so good.

Furthermore, this is excellent for your skin, will make it softer and activate blood in your veins.

No need to be maso at all. Just an epicurean will do it.

Yeah....when you've been soaking 1 hour in a bathtub with water of nearly 45ﾂｰ....look like a lobster....than a cold drink is REALLY GOOOOOD !!!!

I'm no doctor, but one thing I know alcoho and even beer is the worst thing you can drink comming out of an onsen, Have some water or fruit juices. You should be extremely careful especialy if, as you say, your heart is pounding : THAT IS NOT NORMAL !

It does make you feel alive, 'tis true. I did the same thing in Hokkaido in my young "crazy" days. You can simulate the tingling feeling by putting your hand in ice water for a minute. Then take it out and run hot water over it. Now imagine this feeling on your whole body.



In case you were wondering, I had a towel over my "privates" and didn't actually take a marumie shot like it seems. But I put in the no-looking symbol for added effect.

Yes Kirei na me, it has to be the other way round, very cold (you can well imagine snow is nowhere lukewarm) first then hot in second. BUT DO NOT do it to your face, I mean do not bury your head in the snow and then in hot water as it is the worst thing you could do for your eyes, they are quiet fragile.

I'll probably be working when you get to Osaka, so I don't think I'll be able to meet you... But, if you really want to see an incredibly bizarre "Onsen," you HAVE to check out Spa World in Osaka. Technically, it's a sento, but it's worth going to see. It's in Shin-Sekai, just South of Namba next to Tennoji Park. The building is ENORMOUS! There is a wave pool the top floor of the building, too. One floor is entirely for men, another for women. Each have 4-5 different styles of bath, Arabic, Japanese, etc. Each different style bath area is made up in really tacky ways, like huge sculptures pouring water in the Greek bath, tons of fake bamboo and such in other, big pillars, funny fountains, etc. There is also a massage room, a refreshment room (with beer!), a sauna, outdoor baths, all in the bathing area. There is also a floor with video games and all kinds of places to eat. Hell, you can even spend the night there. Outside of Spa World is a shopping area that looks like it was made by Frank Lloyd Wright on acid, including a rollercoaster which wraps around the entire structure. The whole place has the affect of something out of a dream. Even stranger, this giant monument to consumerism is located near Osaka's biggest homeless population and the yakuza run red light district. So as soon as you leave the immediate surrounds, you're suddenly in a run-down seedy part of town.

All in all, a must see in Osaka.



I love Osaka. Best food in Japan.

Aw Mad Pierrot! Maybe I can go to Kyoto first then Osaka? If it would change things? My schedule is made as I go lol, I still have no hotel reservations for after Yokohama. So, its ok Also.. I saw a sign on the Seibu Shinjuku line for Spa World, could only read like 3/4 of it though, so that shows my colors when it comes to the language.
