What version (language) of XP are you using? I've been using XP since before it's official public release and have never had a problem with using Japanese. Oh and by the way there should be no need to install an extra IME when using Japanese in XP. Go to your keyboard settings and regional settings and you should be able to, most easily, find the settings needed to input Japanese.
If you can read the kanji on this or other sites as they are then you should be able to use/input Japanese as well.
Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003 can use the built-in, full-featured East Asian input support that works in all applications.

Hmm, I thought shirimasen was "not know" in the sense of "I have not seen it/heard it before" whereas wakarimasen was "I don't understand" although I am aware that wakarimasen has several possible meanings depending on context. chigai masu?

Nihongo nara, "Shirimasu" to iu kotoba no tsukaikata ga eigo no to chotto chigaimasu node, ki ni siteoite kudasaine.
Sirimasen is a bit different-- frist off, "I know" is "Shitte imasu." It can often be replaced by wakarimasu.
As Elizabeth said, ...no imi ga wakarimasen would work better.

Both can imply not knowing but shirimasen has the quite difference nuance of being used when you didn't know something that you had no reason/expectation to be familiar with or even any particular interest in finding out. For instance, if someone had asked whether I was aware of IME not being compatible with various browsers or operating systems I would have responded "shirimasendeshita" -- it's outside my area of expertise and a question I will gladly leave to others to delve into more fully.Gaijinian said:Atte imasu

De gozaru (not used as much in modern Japanese), or 'de gozaimasu' is quite common of course. And humorous to need to humble yourself in the face of such domineering small cats....they do even look a bit kowai, don't they ?doinkies said:
