Research student to doctoral student - scholarship issues

Hi everyone.

I'm going to study in Saitama University starting this April as MEXT Scholarship Research Student and I have one question that is bugging me pretty hard.

My doctoral advisor already said that I can definitely enroll as a doctoral student after coming to Japan and passing all necessary exams, but I'm still not sure about two things

1) As far as I understand, my scholarship will get cancelled after that, and in order to prolong it I will need to take some separate exam designated by MEXT. Am I right? Anyone knows what exactly this exam is, how difficult it is? Is this just some formality?

2) Will I have to pay all tuition fees as a doctoral student by myself or MEXT will pay it for me, assuming that it is kind of special situation? The fees for the doctoral course are rather high >_<

I'm feeling that I didn't quite get right all info about it and it's bothering me

So, if anyone dealt with this before, please, advise.

1. No. You will be "upgraded" to scholarship for Doctoral degree. I assume you are an Embassy's recommendation student? There will be papers to fill out, but basically you will get the extension to study Doctoral degree. You should consult with your school's student support service. And by the way, there is no separate exam by MEXT.
2. If you have MEXT, you don't have to pay any tuition fees.

I know that you needn't separate exam by mext if you just get Mext in this year to directly study PhD program from your country. If you have studied in Japan before, you have to defense your master thesis or proposal in your university to extend mext scholarship.

I just got confused when I re-read MEXT Scholarship Guidelines for 2012 year recently, I suppose I should really ask questions directly in my university by email as well as in my local Japanese embassy to be 100% about these things

no, I'm going to Japan as MEXT research student by Embassy Recommendation and I will study in Japan directly, but I want to advance to the doctoral student as soon as possible (and my professor already agreed to that)
 
If this is the case then you will have the extension if you pass the exam for the doctoral degree.
In the worst case, you'll have another 6 months to prepare. But I doubt you can fail at all

What about university recommended students?
 
In some universities you are enrolled as a research student first and then sit for an entrance examination which you need to pass to be promoted to as a doctoral student. So even if you are an embassy selected MEXT scholar you need to follow this route. Todai is one of this kind. Engineering students need to attend either physics or chemistry or mathematics exam. I have seen some past questions of Todai and i have to say they are not just basic rather cover some advance knowledge in your field. Not sure about your university. You better consult with someone from your university.

Or how does it works? It is too late to apply or not?

Yes. You can apply for research or doctoral program through Embassy or university but I'm know that, all of university close the dealine in this time. You should apply for next semester. It's begin from july or August depend on each university and begin from May or June depend on embassy where you live.

Yes, it's called University Recommendation's MEXT. However, it's only for October entrance, and the slot depends on the university (allocated by MEXT each year), and some even doesn't have a clear program: you'll have to contact a professor directly so he can secure a slot for you. The university's website is a good start, I guess
 
Mext Scholarship through university recommendation 2012-...

Hi guys,
I have sent my application for the 5 years PhD program in Policy Analysis at National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies. They've said the results will come out on early June and I am freaking out! I really wanna get the MEXT Scholarship, but I heard it will be harder to get it from university recommendation this year (cuz of economic situation in Japan etc). Any advice?
In addition, my overall GPA is 3.76 but I am about to graduate in my junior year (Bachelor in Economics), so I'm afraid they might say that I m not ready yet to start with the program since I've done it in 3 years instead of the regular 4 years. Do u guys think it really matters? :?
