A few weeks ago, I realised that my passport had expired—I am not travelling much overseas. To my astonishment, my embassy provided me with a new passport in just two weeks. I prepared myself for one of those tiring pilgrimages to Immigration to update my passport info. Little did I know that Japanese visas are no longer tied to your passport but your zairyu card (在留カード, formerly known as Alien Residence Permit or "gaijin card").
You no longer need to update the Japanese authorities as long as your residence title is valid. However, upon departure, you will have to produce your old passport.
There are two exceptions to the above: if your passport is lost or stolen, you must notify Immigration.
