pretty rural areas

i'm currently studying abroad in Japan, and i am about to have a 2 week spring break here pretty soon. i was wanting to explore around the area and see some sights. i am in the nagoya area. are there any good rural areas around nagoya that is worth seeing? i don't want to use the shinkansen because that is for further places. i was hoping just to use the meitetsu and local trains. i was thinking about going to mie-ken. any recommendations??

Takayama is connected to Nagoya by train, its supposed to be great (I've never been there myself), but Mie is nice too.

It connects Iida-shi, Nagano from Toyohashi, Aichi.
Scenery to run in parallel with Tenryu River is beautiful.
I am famous among Japanese railroad fans.

You may enjoy to go to the Kiso-river and visit Tsumago-Juku and Magome!

I have been there myself and enjoyed it very much. Easy to go from Nagoya, a direct line.

Hi,

70% of Japan is made of forests, narrow valleys and paddies. You will find anywhere nice hiking trails and small villages. I am more familiar with the Tokyo area, but I am sure you will find similar places around Nagoya (to know more about hiking in Japan, you may refer to this story (Hikes outside Tokyo)

From Nagoya, you are also not very far from Shizuoka-ken. Izu peninsula has a great shoreline. The oigawa valley, and its old steam train, is also very interesting.

I studied Buddhism in Shimane-ken for about a month two years ago, and I go back and visit the priest and his family each summer. (Which means.. one summer after that so far, haha). It's about a 15min drive from Iwami-Ginza, a popular domestic tourist location and recently certified as a World Heritage site for the old silver mines there that used to provide silver for China, Korea, and the Dutch back in the Muromachi and Tokugawa periods. There are lots of temples out in that area too. It's farther from Tokyo, but you can take an overnight "Highway Bus" from Shibuya station to Izumo, and then take the train from Izumo to the surrounding areas of Shimane (about 1hr on the train from Izumo to where I was staying, Nima-station (though I was in the town next to Nima). Nima also has the Sand Museum (which I have yet to visit actually). I hope you have a fun time on your trip!
