Practise thread

This is for me to practise translating sentences using words from my nasty-vocab list. Feel free to point out my mistakes or ask questions.

Incidently Google thinks it should be になる not となる (first time I've had a grammar correction suggested by Google for Japanese ...)

Concerning how personel are selected, the handing of problems when they occur, the carrying out of the budget etc., I think there is a requirement to make the standards clear to the listeners.

If small countries abase themselves to large countries they gain the trust of the large countries. It follows that if you can gain trust by abasing yourself there are those in the lower ranks who have gained trust.

Hmm, that looks very dubious. Was the original odd or have I horribly mistranslated I wonder?

I think the first one is more "Sun turns to a specialist [to add] blogging functions to their business software"

"Just as unusually dextrous as" is a bit off. More like "X can move with great agility, just like an ostrich"

Normally you "administer" a budget rather than "carrying out" a budget. Also the translation would be clearer if you swapped the first and second halves, to get rid of the Japanese sentence structure.

Not sure but maybe "In this way, there are those who gain trust by showing humility, and there are those who gain trust while in a position of inferiority". I think the first refers to big --> small and the second part to small --> big, echoing the above two lines (you only quoted one). I think it isn't actually a conditional formation but rather "on the one hand/on the other hand"

That makes sense, although in English 'If' is often used to emphasise something when the condition is a 'given'.

Yeah, it's like a "rhetorical conditional" or something. Maybe in English it's used more for contrast though - "if some were pleased, there were many who were furious" or something??

When it comes to 育む, personally I think "nuture" sounds jargonny even if it is literally accurate, and maybe even what that kind of person would say if they spoke English. If I could get away with it I would say something quite different like "safeguards" or "protects" or "provides for" or something.
