Power conversions

I recently bought a laptop here in America. I am going to Japan for a year and I was wondering what kind of power converter I would need. Do you have any recommendations?

Please read the small print on the rear of your notebook computer's AC adaptor pack. It should provide divine enlightenment. Of course if it says something other than: Input 100-240V AC 50-60Hz then you probably have a machine that is the spawn of Satan...or one of those really old Toshiba or Gateways with a built-in mains adaptor.

Sorry, what I mean is if it says: Input 100-240V AC 50-60Hz then pack it up to take with you and quit worrying.

The pulg has three prongs I thought in Japan they only have two prong outlets.

well then you don't need a converter...you need an adapter. Go to Radio Shack or Home Depot and tell them you need a three prong to two prong adapter.

Is the cable running from the wall socket to the AC adaptor pack a standard three-prong plug to two female receptor effort? If so, then just pick up a new cable here for about $5 and you won't need to have a large protruding adaptor on the end of the cable.

If it's a Dell three female receptor type then you'll need to protrude.

What I have been using for the past year is one of those power bar things, five 3-prong outlets in a row. I've plugged in my computer, ipod charger, clock, and some other things, I forget. Then I just put a two prong adapter (any travel store on earth) at the end, and it's been perfect ever since. I might get a response saying that it's a horrible idea and everything I have will break tomorrow, but it's been fine for a year and it's better than buying 5 different adapters.
