Polite imperative

What is the difference between saying 待ってください and 待ってなさい, or 止めてください and 止めなさい? I've heard both used in different situations. If I were to guess, 待ってください is polite and 待ってなさい is semi-polite, but I can't be sure.

待ってなさい ＝ 待ちなさい ;-)

-te kudasai for general, polite requests, -nasai still semi-polite for requests of subordinates or underlings.

* A soft way of issuing a command which is firm at the same time; like when a teacher wants a student to pay attention or when a parent scolds it's child.
* Unlike ください (kudasai), なさい only applies to the positive forms of verbs.
* なさい uses the stem of verbs.

待ってなさい。＝待っていなさい。

Thus, 待ってなさい is a command to stay in the state right now, whereas 待ってください is a request not to do something. The difference might be subtle in some cases, though.
