Plural forms

I was in Great America Six Flags(a theme park), on halloween and I was looking at the temp tattoo/body art kanji you could have put on you. But then I noticed an odd thing.. they said 友 is "Friends" Although i do understand that the kanji is suppose to mean hand to hand.. I don't understand how it can be plural.. for what i knew, the kanji just means Friend. So how exactly would you say the plural of a word? I've noticed in my time i've studied japanese, i've never really come across a plural word. If anyone has any links or info on this could you give me them? Doomo arigatoo.

That's because there really aren't plural forms of words in Japanese.* Therefore, 猫 can mean either "cat" or "cats," depending on context (as with everything in Japanese).



*There are some plural suffixes for personal pronouns and even proper nouns. 達（たち） is used to make plurals such as 私達 and 田中たち. There is also 等（ら）, as in 僕等.

ahh so there are words that tell you ahead of time, such as;
There are many 猫.
Or else if you were going to say, "One of my cats always meow."
You would pretty much instead say it as, "My cat Einstein, always meows."
