If you think about it, you really can't lock the door before you leave.

A more common way of expressing this in Japanese is <verb>際に

And 帰る has a much more limited usage than "leave" or "return" does in English. Hence Elizabeth's choice of 出掛ける. A common mistake made is to mix up 帰る and 戻る, so please be careful of that distinction as well.

Oh, really. That's an interesting choice of words. For the key example, I wouldn't use anything more elevated than 時に、or sometimes/some cases of course you will hear 時には.
