私は知らなかったんだけど、ネットで調べたら、どうやら映画の撮影用のカメラのことを「キャメラ」って呼んでたみたい。（普通のカメラと区別するためという説も。）

それならこれはどうかな。
ちょっと前は「カッコイイ」、今は「イケてる」って言ってるけど、
その昔は「いかす」とか「いかしてる」って言ってたらしい。

「その昔」って言ってましたけど、先週友達の家に行っていろいろ話してたら、友達が建築写真集を差し出して「これ、いかす家があるんだ、見てくれ」って言ったんですよ。その友達も別に古い言い方をする人じゃないし、普通に「かっこいい」とか「いけてる」とかも言いますね。（ちなみに年は２５くらい）

やっぱまだ死語じゃないじゃないですかね？

I think "ikasu" is actually out of fashion. If a friend (presumably young) used it, my guess is that the person lives in an environment where it is used casually (parents who use it often, etc.). I'm thinking this because my husband still uses a lot of these "dead words" at home, and the kids unwittingly use them with their friends, who find the words amusing.

I discovered that I know almost 100% of the words in the Shigo Jiten in undrentide's link and was alive when they were in use...

Hence you're on your "second life?"

Actually, I was looking around Yahoo!JAPAN last night, and it seems that セカンド・ライフ is used for things you do outside of your main job or home, like hobbies or whatnot. Is that close?

It probably is used that way, too. But for people in my generation, it means starting out a new life after retirement--such as learning new skills, going back to school, living abroad, a new job or volunteer work, etc.

In my case, it also means hanging around in "Second Life" on cyberspace, though I'm not getting anywhere yet--not enough time and money...

There's a funny comic in 問題な日本語 like this where a guy gives some food to his cat and uses あげる, then gives something to his girlfriend and uses やる (or maybe the order was reversed, but the point is the same). I took it as meaning it was common for Japanese to say things like that (but I'm starting to wonder after reading epigene's comment).

It is more common, at least from what I've been told, for women to use ageru too broadly more than men. Particularly in everyday speech. Writing for both sexes is probably still comparatively correct.

The "give" verb in Japanese is a tricky one.
さしあげる means give to someone who ranks significanly higher than you in the social (and biological, meaning man vs. animal) hierarchy, like a teacher/mentor, respected leader, etc.
あげる also means to give to a higher-ranking person or a peer (including friends).
For animals, plants and other living creatures, the correct form is やる .
ねこにみるくをやる。
はなにみずをやる。
I know there are way too many Japanese people who can't tell the difference and disagree with me, saying things like "Ooooh! My pet Neko-chan is part of my family!!", but this is still the correct way (sadly, a shrinking minority today )
I'm an animal/plant lover but still use やる to feed cats and water/give fertilizer to plants...

I've decided this is the distinction I am going to hold to as well. I know all the arguments that やる has taken on a very 乱暴 and not 優しい connotation, that あげる is already so well-established as a woman's word not to be called natural, that pets are part of the family etc etc. Still, I very much respect anyone that continues to follow a higher standard, a stricter order of language as it were. Even if most of those people are in their 60's or 70's by now. 言葉はとても奥深いものなのですね。

日本語で。。。

「あげる」を使うのは「日本の母親は子供を甘やかしがちだ」を反映しているだけでしょうね。
そして、女性は優しく話せれば話すほど、男性の意思を従うと思います。
