Hello,

I am planning to visit Japan for the first time in June of this year.

I have planned the following itinerary, but I am not sure if this will be a good itinerary. Please comment:

Day 1 - Arriving at Narita airport, during morning. Heading to Tokyo.
Day 2, 3 - Visit Tokyo
Day 4 - Heading to an overnight stay in Nikko.
Day 5 - Leaving Nikko, heading to Takayama.
Day 6, 7 - Visit Takayama
Day 8 - Yadanaka onsen (see the snow monkeys)
Day 9 - Leaving Yadanaka onsen and heading to Koyasan
Day 10 - Visit Koyasan (stay an overnight in a buddhist temple)
Day 11 - leaving Koyasan and heading to Kyoto
Day 12 - Visit Kyoto

I am also a bit concern with my budget. I will buy a japan railways pass (14 days), i will sleep in the cheaper hotels and do not eat in fancy restaurants. Do you think 1000 €uros will be enough for accomodation, eating and entrance in attractions?

Thanking you in advance, I will wait for your comments.
Best Regards
Sofia

Sounds like a nice itinerary. But I don't think 1000 Euros will get you very far for 12 days. I would recommend around 2051 Euros for 12 days. I generally take around $1,500 U.S. with me on 10-day trips. It is better to take more than you need than to find yourself without any money left before your vacation is over. Also, you have to consider non-JR trains, subways, buses and taxis along with any unforseen emergencies that could crop up.

2051??

Dear ArmandV,

2051 Euros? It seems you did very detailed calculations! :-)
I almost fell of my chair when I looked at that number! It really exceeds my budget!
Besides that, were you refering to your 10 days trips to Japan when you mentioned 1500 US? Because if you did, 1500 US is about 1230 Euros and that is not very far from my initial budget. 12 days... maybe would cost 1500 Euros?
However, I agree with you when you say its better to take some extra money in case something unexpected occur. I plan to do that.

Anyway... 2051 Euros for 12 days in Japan, seems too bad news!!

Thank you for your reply!

I have traveled in your trip planned place.
I do not understand where there is Yadanaka onsen.
Please teach information to know a place.

Well, I made a guess on what $2,000-$2,500 would be in Euro. I may have overestimated a bit, but $2,000 in the Euro equivalent should suffice (I don't know what your spending habits are). I used to underestimate until I got wise. Still, it is better to have more than you need for the reasons previously stated. You should probably sit down and figure out how much you want to budget yourself per day for meals, transportation (non-JR), lodging, souvenirs and entertainment. Plus, you may have forgotten to pack something and have to buy it in Japan (there always seems to be something). Are you going alone or with friends (who can share some costs)?

:)

I am going with a friend, which makes double costs, i think. The only thing we can share is accomodation, once double rooms are supposely cheaper than singles.

Non-JR buses, trains and subways it is a "per person" charge. But if you should decide to take a taxi, you and your friend can share the cost as they are generally per carload.

Your itinerary looks great, I hope you'll enjoy the visit!
1000 Euro is approx. JPY140,000. That means your budget is JPY11,600/day.
(I understood that JR Pass is not included in this.)

For cheap accomodations, someone from other forum suggested this website.
(I have never used it myself so I'm not sure how much reliable it is, though.)
Hostels Worldwide - Online Hostel Bookings, Ratings and Reviews

You are going to Nikko and Koyasan, both are famous for temples.
Please note that to visit these famous temples, you have to pay admission for each section, and the fee varies JPY200-500. (They offer a kind of pass which costs around JPY1,300-1,500.)

The name of the onsen famous for snow monkeys is not Yadanaka but Yudanaka, in Nagano.

As other posters mentioned, you have to consider the costs for non-JR transportation.

You might find additional help at this forum:
japan-guide.com forum - Questions -
You can post your questions, but also you can search the posts with key words.

:-)

Thank you

Hello all!

I am delighted with your comments. Thank you very much for the advices.
I suppose my trip should be well planned and I still have some time till June.

I will consider an extra cost for non JR transportation.
Regarding the monkeys... .. well.. i admit they give me the creeps! Maybe they are not so interesting when not bathing and relaxing! ☝
I guess i'll have to hide all things that might call their attention and do not tease them by any chance!

Best Regards, and thank you again!

hey everybody--long time since i posted in this site. I'm headed to Tokyo June20-27th and i'm taking about 1,200US. I'm going with the "better safe than sorry" idea. Thankfully my hotels have already been paid for. Just make a daily budget and try to stick with it.

That should do it. I took about $1,900 for my week's stay (I had to pay for my rooms out of it, though) in April. I still managed to come home with $300. Have fun. Where are you staying, etc. in Tokyo? Don't forget to bring maps!

$300 is enough for some people
the kind that can explore for a day on umeboshi, admittedly
but that includes the cost of hotels as well
i have friend in saitama (actually several) and atagawa (also several)
both of them say it has already started
hope this helps. good luck
