Phrases to console after a death

Hey guys, I come before you in a less than ideal state. I just found out my former host dad, who I lived with for close to 7 months in 2003, died of pancreatic cancer. I'm visiting in 3 weeks, but I wanted to send my host mom some kind of consolation or something...and I have no experience whatsoever. Just something small, a note or whatever is generally regarded as acceptable. I just don't want to do nothing...any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, that's really devastating news, MeAndroo. My heartfelt condolences to you and all the surrounding friends and family. I would be a total wreck in the case of my host father's death, so hopefully this former thread will be at least a small bit of help.
