pets? i haven't seen much about animals in japan what the most common animals you see around japan do people keep pets or do they prefer no hassle?


wot does everyone on here have as a pet?

i have 2 dogs
a cat
a hamster/gerbil
and a spider
some fish

dogs and cats are really popular, assuming the landlord accepts them in the apartment/mansion...or you live in an actual house....

but there are many folks with other pets, including rabbits, and some exotic stuff...

what I dislike is when they discard their pets into the city when they want to go for a new trendy pet....irresponsible people (not just Japanese) should not keep pets....and the pet shops should not sell them to such people (like that is likely)

den4 I totally agree with you about irresponable owners. I personally have a Golden Retriever and two Red Ear Slider turtles.

I see many people with dogs/cats/turtles and various birds. But if you are looking for something "tied" to Japan, I guess it would be the Shiba (dog breed). Other than that, I don't know of anything particular to Japan.

I think cats and small dogs are popular because of limited amount of space. A lot of them are crazy about chihuahuas!

Pets With A Pet !

My two cats have a pet fish. One cat plays tag with it every morning, running around the tank batting at the fish.

Do kids count? If so, then I have one daughter.

I want a pet so bad but we're not allowed but we're building a house and then we'll get one in a couple years. I want a cat or a minature doberman. I like small animals

Besides that I have a frog, the ultimate low maintenance pet. Feed it once a week or two, make sure theres plenty water.

I never thought of having a pet frog. When I was younger we used to catch them and play with them all of the time. But I never considered keeping them! My kids caught 23 tadpoles a few weeks ago, and we kept them long enough to watch them transform! It was pretty awesome, and the kids learned a lot!

Hate to hop on the soapbox, but mark it up to growing up in the AKC dog obedience world. This is not directed at ya' Hitman-X, but just the topic in general

Please do not buy any breed of dog mixed with wolf or a pureblood wolf. There is a reason why we don't classify wolves and dogs in the same species.

Wolves, even half-breeds will always be wild and always needed to be treated as such. They do not make good pets and may always pose a danger to people who do not know how to read them - unfortuantly this means children and your normal pet owner. Wolves in the wild run from man because they are naturally timid and because they have somewhere to run to. Put that wolf in your living room and it might do just fine - until something spooks it and suddenly it thinks it is cornered and under attack. Ever seen the TV footage of police dogs at work? Imagine something much wilder, stronger, and bigger thinking it must fight or die...guess who is going to win...

If you don't know how a pack works, and how to keep every member of that pack in their place all the time, you are just asking for trouble. Wolves and half-breeds are far more volitile than domestic dogs (though the two speak the same language). Even domestic dogs, when you get the smarter breeds esp., need to be seen and related to as a dog on their terms, not a hamster or rat in a cage.

Wolves belong in the wild - keep them there.

PS: Toy poodles are becoming very big in Japan. A topshelf one will run you 6000 USD. If only people would upgrade to a miniature poodle - less yapping and still cute. A standard would be best, but then you have to be ready for a very smart, very big dog. Very smart, smaller dogs are easier to keep out of your trash and off the couch, but still a joy ;-)
