Past tense of verbs?

How does naru become natte shimatta? Yeah, very short question, but I'd like a technical(correct term?) answer.

Sorry for wasting the time of anyone who read this, I have already found the answer by searching "te + shimatta."

There are a lot of 'te' conjugation verbs (ie. miru, oku) so if you see te in the middle of a big verb, assume it's joined to something else.
