particle question

I was in the yahoo japan chat one day and someone said.

"Genki desu yo!" which, if im not mistaken, means "i'm feeling great!"

but what is the "yo" for? Is it a particle? If so then whats its use?

Hi Hanza,

'yo' is a sentence ending particle just used to add emphasis to the point you are making. Its relatively common in normal speech. I saw it described once as a '!' but I wouldn't really think of it quite like that. As you listen to more Japanese you'll get the hang of it.

Second Yo is used to portray a greater feeling with a response.
Genki desu. I'm good.
genki desu yo. Oh I am great today!
There maybe other uses for it but that is the most commonly used form i think

I think of 'yo' as like saying '..., I tell you!', like you're trying to convince someone or force them to listen to information.

ii desu yo! - it's good, I tell you!

Yeah i hear "i tell you", "you know" but I have always heard it used when somebody is excited or passionately speaking of a topic.

Example.
A: kyou watashi ha kakkoii kuruma wo mita yo! Today I saw the very cool car.
B: maji!! sugoi ne.... Reall?!! amazing huh...
A: un! chou chou kakkoikatta yo! Yeah, It was very very cool!

Ex 2
A: OI! soko de sore wo shitenai kudasai! Hey! Please don't do that there!
B: ee! nani, nan to iimashitaka? huh? What, what did you say?
A: OI, Nande kiitenai yo! Hey, Why don't you listen!

When conjugating 良い always use the よい reading. It should be "kakkou yokatta". Following the same rule:
yokunai
yokunakatta
yokereba
...etc

The main ways I think it is used are when you are giving out new information,
emphsizing important information or giving a command (enforcing your opinion) or instructions.

For example XXXほうがいいですよ。
絶対無理ですよ。
ありませんよ。

We've all seen plenty of examples and there are really too many ways to list.

nai de before kudasai is proper -- the rest of it was in a rather formal style.
No yo just depends on the tone you want to set I suppose. Sorry I'm at work now -- maybe someone else can elaborate.

I believe the misunderstanding stems from the fact that kakkouii is actually kakkou ga ii. Thus, you only change ii/yoi.

Yeah, I'm not really very familiar with "yo" as a question word or how adding the "yo" changes the sentence (probably just gives it a little more uumph) but I know that のよ with a rising tone can be used to signal a question that requires explanation. Like 何をするのよ？ or もっと掃除したらどうなのよ？
Anyway, so I changed my mind and it doesn't depend on the tone after all.
Basically どうして・なんで聞いていないよ。は日本語として通らないとおもいます。

本当？なんともいえないですが、多分どちらも普通に使わないでしょう。
よく、同じような言葉を使うのは私の知る限りでは恋人だけです。でも、また調べませんでした。
ただ怠けているだけですよ。

そうなんです。誤りを指摘してくれてありがとう。先ほど、たまたま「通じない」が使われたメールは
見つけたばかりです。「通る」も同じく「Make understandable, possible to communicate through」という意味で使えないね。特に、「通る」は Passable speech というわけではありません。これからもどちらの言葉を使ったらいいのか迷ってしまうときに、まず、一人で調べてみます。
