Pan originates from the Latin "Panis".

The word "pan" in Japanese originates from the Portuguese correlate "pﾃ｣o". This is one of the few influences left by the Portuguese colonizers before being kicked out of the island in the 16th century.

As for panis, yeah... the Roman empire died out but did influence a lot of European, African and Indo cultures.

hard to tell sometimes.....seen so many bread shops that use Pain for the French, and many shops tend to cator towards French style bakeries, so I assumed it was a French origin.....
