I tried to keep my language skills up , but found almost no one in Maine who spoke Japanese. About 10 years after I left Japan , the local night school offered a Japanese class. I was so excited only to find it was kindergarden level for beginners. The female teacher shot me down big time saying my Japanese must have come from high school dropout hippies , LOL. I also remember when I once traveled to Tokyo and Japanese there saying my Japanese was filled with slang and vulger words. I guess considering I learned most of my Japanese at the underground bar where I worked. I was too lazy to learn hardly any Kanji. Because Fukuoka was a military town , almost all signs were in English & Japanese.
