Sorry, this wasn't meant to be hostile. :)

Forums are topical, so for a new topic, you should start a new thread. Anyhow, good luck with your banknotes.

I had a bunch of old notes of the same vintage, and I ended up selling them on yahoo in Japan. The Bank of Japan printed so many of these notes, they aren't really rare.

Is there a cut off for old notes like this to be used as legal tender? If so the denominational value is probably worth more than the collectible value

This makes me worry about the potential that the pile of coins and notes I've squirreled away for my "next trip to Japan" may someday have to be sold on ebay at a loss 😬

Bank of Japan says you can still use them as legal tender.
But the jaded cynic in me says if you take anything older than one of the 1000, 5000, or 10000 notes from the past 30 years or so to the local conbini, there will be a lot of air sucking. If you try to use it in a taxi cab, you may learn a few new swear words.
Fear not, the BOJ says they will exchange any old notes for new ones. Or, in the case of low denominations, they will exchange for coins.
If I recall correctly, I sold my notes at a slight loss on yahoo. I maybe had 50,000 yen worth of old notes of various denominations, and I probably got 45,000 yen for them on yahoo. For me, it was the price I paid for the convenience of getting rid of them. I didn't have the time or the patience to take them to the BOJ.
