I wanted to add a further discussion about learning kanji. Learning kanji is pretty difficult if you don't have some way to group them. There's an article on this site 'Mnemonics' which details a way of learning kanji in their onyomi groups.
Rather than learning each one individually, it's much better to take a group of Japanese kanji with the same reading and link them via some kind of colourful story, and pictures today. This makes learning the kanji a much more colourful experience. An article about this method is available on the website (not at all commercial) and it's really worth having a look at this theory.
