Just got back from the ol' immigration dept. for a re-entry permit and was handed a rather disturbing pamphlet that I'm hoping others might have some information about, and why this is set to be implemented (july 9, 2012(
There are four points...
1. a resident card will be issued
Doesn't seem much has changed there except it'll have some sort of chip in it to protect against forgeries.
2. The period of stay will be extended to a maximum of 5 years
This is the big one for me, and maybe all permanent residents in that we lose permanent residence! We have to reapply for a new visa every five years.
3. The re-entry permit system will be changed.
Basically we don't need one, and you can stay out of country for a year before losing your visa.
4. The alien registration system will be abolished
Sounds like the same ol' same ol', but with a fresh coat of paint.
I think I've got this right, but hope others chime in to let me know how I got it wrong.
