Tourism New Japan Night View Heritage site: Tama Intercity Monorail

The Yakei Convention & Visitors Bureau, which recognizes the best night views in Japan, has chosen the Tokyo Tama Intercity Monorail line as one of the Japan Night View Heritage sites this year. The monorail line, which connects the northern and southern parts of the Tama area in western Tokyo, is not only a convenient way to travel but also a great way to enjoy the stunning night scenery of the city and the cosy lights of the residential areas along the way.

Connecting Tama Center Station in Tama and Kamikitadai Station in Higashi-Yamato, the monorail line runs through the rich greenery of the Tama Hills, riverside areas, residential districts and other neighbourhoods. After night falls, passengers can enjoy panoramic views along the line. At sunset in winter, there is even a chance to see "Diamond Fuji," which is when the setting sun aligns behind the peak of Mount Fuji. The bureau added that the sight of the monorail running against the backdrop of the Tama region was also praised for its charm. "Ideally, we would love it if everyone took the monorail to experience the night view from the train windows," an official of the monorail operator said. This year, 13 of 160 candidate locations nationwide were selected as Night View Heritage sites. 280 locations are currently on the list, including the latest additions.
