A lovely Ryokan
My partner and I stayed here last fall. It is a wonderful place to visit. Nagase is centrally located in Takayama, perfect for evening and early-morning walks around town wearing your yukata. The room was very spacious and overlooked a lovely garden. The men's furo is not particularly elaborate, but it is very calming and peaceful. In our 19-hour stay, I made 4 trips to the furo.
The kaiseki dinner was exceptionally good. Many local ingredients were used, and the presentation was lovely. The breakfast was also delicious. All meals are served in your room.
The building is very lovely, with many beautiful pieces of art throughout the premises. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and there knowledge of English is more than adequate. There is no internet access. There is a convenience store on the corner in case you get a late-night Haagen-Dazs craving.
One caveat: if you have big, white-people feet (like me), the geta they provide will not fit comfortably. If you are planning on walking around town in your yukata, and don't want to wear your regular shoes, you should buy an inexpensive pair of geta to wear.
Our visit to Takayama and Nagase was a real highlight of our trip to Japan.
