I know it's grammatically wrong. But can you say (b)?
(b) My favorite food is an apple.

The problem of singular/plural is always a puzzle to me.

I would say .............My favorite food is the apple.
or...............My favorite fruit is an apple.
or...............One of my favorite foods is the apple.

Oh, thank you very much for your help, Uncle Frank.

How about "Apples are my favorite food"?

That sounds good to me. For some reason though , I think of "food" and "fruit" as different groups. I think of food as the main food group like meat and vegtables , but an apple as a desert you have as a snack or after a meal. Maybe that is something from the area I grew up in(northeast US)?

Here in the mid-west we just say food, I really don't hear fruit at all. "Apples are my favorite food" does sound the most natural to me though. Could say something like, "Apples are one of my favorite types of fruit" too.

Hmm...interesting. Thank you for your information, Soggycake.
