Monbukagakusho scholarship urgent question

Would anybody be king enough to tell me if an individual is eligible to complete the Monbukagakusho scholarship once in Japan. I am currently applying to Sophia university's FLA program and due to time constraints I won't be able to meet deadlines in the USA for the 2010 period. If I am to be accepted as an undergraduate in Sophia University is it possible to apply for the Monbukagakusho scholarship once admitted and attending the university??

PLEASE HELP. I SERIOUSLY NEED TO KNOW IN ORDER TO PLAN FOR FINANCIAL AID.

I think there is a category known as university recommendation in the MEXT Scholarship. I think some universities offer that scholarship for students who acquired a place in the university. Try find out with your supervisor or the International Student Office in your university.

Thanks for the reply. Actually I am in high school. I really hope that I can apply to the 'Monbukagakusho scholarship once I am in sophia university. otherwise i am screwed.

so if you do enter sophia university, your only source of income will be to take a chance on the monbusho scholarship?

the chances of getting the undergraduate scholarship for americans are rather low... like 1 in the entire country. im not sure about the university recommendation though.

For students who are already in Japan, there is such a thing as domestic selection by university recommendation. But I guess the spots for that are relatively limited and quite competitive (lots of Chinese and Korean students already in Japan, self-financed but would like to have the scholarship).

Also note that in order to get *to* Japan and into your school, in order for the authorities to issue your visa, you are required provide some documentation (i.e. a bank statement) to show that you have enough funding available for at least your first year of expenses. A few years ago, the required amount was 1 million yen.

My advice would be to have a backup plan to go to school in the US for at least your first year, and apply next year if you absolutely want to do the full program at Sophia.
It probably would also be wise to keep your mind open to doing your undergrad in the US.. it's MUCH easier to get in on a one-year exchange program than to get the monbukagakusho scholarship for undergrad, and you might find one year to be quite enough (I certainly did at the time).
